Nasty sight

Featured Replies

Was driving down a street near Borough tube station last night, when I came across a rather nasty accident which can't have happened long before (one emergency vehicle was already there, another turned up as I was there).

Obviously I didn't want to rubberneck and as the road was totally blocked, I turned around and went the other way.

It was an offest head-on between a Peugeot 307 and a 106 (or possibly a Saxo). Bearing in mind the road was an urban road with a 30 limit, I couldn't believe the carnage (admittedly they could have been going faster and then it's the combined closing speed). Both were totalled right up and into the passenger cell. Could still see the powder floating around from the airbags on the 307 and the driver was just being extricated.

Although I didn't see it happen, it looked as if the 106/Saxo had spun round and was almost pointing in the same direction as the 307.

I just hope the drivers and any passengers were ok.

Made me stop and think...

That's a very narrow road IMO with restaurants & pubs for after-hours "eats" and even with a police station proximate to the Borough market. What where these people thinking as it can only have been speed. A rhetorical question as, unless it was an unavoidable skid, then it's a good reason for identifying that as an accident black spot, cameras, the full kit and kaboodle.

Not good to witness :grouphug: and hopefully posting on the forum will give an alert.

My best regards

Mo

What where these people thinking as it can only have been speed.

I'd have to disagree that the only possibility could have been "speed"...inattention on the part of one or other of the driver would have resulted in a head-on collision.

At well within the speed limit, shocking results would easily be acheived from this sort of collision between a small French hatchback (light and flimsy) and a new highly-rated NCAP car (entire front end up to the start of the passenger cell will crumple easily to absorb as much impact energy as possible)...

Agreed - and without knowing exactly where, I can only say that Borough Station is on a five-way junction and, at night, many race the lights (and the next set) to get onto and over London Bridge. Again, without knowing, it is difficult to suggest that greater attention on the one part might have prevented the accident. Though, within the speed limit, attention on both parts would have helped of course.

Mine was not a diatribe against speed, but on that road it probably wouldn't be out of place in the late hours.

The site was actually just up Long Lane towards Caledonian Market, but there are indeed fast food places along that stretch. As I say, luckily I didn't witness the impact, just the results.

The 307 was about 45

I saw a nasty one on the A1 a couple of weeks ago, a new shape Micra had somehow ened up in a layby and smacked into the back of a parked artic. The Micra was right underneath the artic with the roof squashed down to the waistline of the car.

Fire brigade were standing about and a tarp was hiding where the driver was, pretty sad seeing that and certianly makes you think.
