Cam Belt change guide

Featured Replies

Planning on changing the timing belt next week.

ANy one got any guides for a bit of light reading before I dive in??

I was going to change mine last week but due to a back injury i thought it best to get my local skoda dealer to do it,i had a look in autodata & they said to remove the exhaust & driveshafts,a pal in the trade says it can be done without doing this but you have to be carefull not to pop a driveshaft out of its joint, worse bit is getting the engine mounting undone & out the way & the engine up high enough on the o/s,setting the timing up & the tensioner seems striaght foward,id replace the cambelt, idler pulleys, tensioner & water pump & aux drivebelt.

This is for a TFSI engine,is yours a petrol or diesel vrs?

I'm all for a bit of DIY, my car is due an oil and filter.

Priced up 5 litres of Quantum (Castrol Edge) 5W30, a genuine sump plug and an oil filter. About £50 delivered.

But, it's an hour or two on a Saturday morning, it's often raining and it's due to get much colder over the next few days.

For £129 I can have it done at my dealer and get a stamp in the book.

Now I'm not one for throwing around £80 uneccessarily but weighing up the pro's and con's I'll let the dealer do it in his heated workshop!

By the way, Skoda's National Pricing has a flat rate for a cambelt at £299.

Are you doing the water pump too? If not add an extra £70...

I did my own cam belt change about 6 months ago.

It cost me about £120 in parts. However it took me and a friend 6 hours to do on a saturday afternoon, and although it wasn't really difficult, it wasn't exactly easy either. £299 is a very good price to have it done at the dealer, and next time i'd be tempted to get the dealer to do it.
