more fines...

Featured Replies

TBH I would rather have these than speed cameras.

Good tyres with appropriate depth are one of the best safety devices that you can put on a car.

How about spending money on education drivers rather than fining them when i bet over half don't even know the legal limit

My boss didn't even know tyres have tread markers :S

why is it their job to educate drivers ?

iirc it was a question in my driving test, this country is still expecting to be mollycoddled all the time, bald tyres, faulty ABS and looking at phone reduces stopping power, therefore increasing collateral damage on the roads (you and me) higher insurance, lost no claims, more uninsured drivers blah blah

My car is 100% legal therefore i drive it on the public highway

90% legal = illegal !

Lets fine the **** out of everyone breaking the law, 4 bald tyres could take 20 people out at a bus stop maybe more, let get these idiots off the road !

Maybe a more reasonable approach would be to give 24/48hr to get new tyres. But I suspect that this system is automated so that like speed cameras the driver won't get a letter informing them of the fine for two weeks. Meanwhile they're merrily driving around on bald tires.

Unless they're told there and then this is revenue raising and not a safety measure :punch:

I think it would be better spent on just giving them a 6 month ban. Everyone should know the limit.

Anybody notice the date of that article?

15 months later, no known further progress on these.

FUD Only?

I linked from another forum without realising the date, the article is from last year but the OP was on a speed awareness course in Scotland 2 days ago where they heard this...

what is FUD?

Cat FUD?

FUD = Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt.

(Not suggesting you were spreading it, aimed at original article  )

It's only focussing on one aspect of tyres and it would be interesting to know how it deals with tyre grooves within the centre three quarters that aren't cut as deep as the grooves containing the wear bar indicators. How will it get on with vehicles where a different limit is permitted? It'll still miss the tyres with sidewall bulges, deep cuts and not correctly inflated.

So, if this comes in, and you get a summons, and then you ask the question "When was this device last examined for clogging from mud, dead leaves, horse crap, dead rabbits etc", and if the reply wasn't immediately before the device examined your tyres.........

It sounds about as practical as a walking stick with a castor on the bottom. Road grids only get cleaned about twice a year, hence the big puddles which form in Autumn.

Being safe drivers,

We all have good treads and no under inflated tyres, so whats to bother about.

There is all sorts of legislation always being planned and looked at.

There is Road Noise of tyres & all types of things.

There were sound recording boxes on the Posts near tyre cameras when i spotted them in Edinburgh.

The tyre monitors (cameras) were on trial for long enough,

& there are places that they would have their uses.

Like at the Gate of Police car compounds,

because the cars around my way seem to have non working bulbs often enough,

(they always show the cars being washed and checked on Police TV programmes,

do they never check their lights except when TV cameras are present?)

& the indicators never seem to work, so who knows what their tyres or pressures are like.

What might be nice is if instead of sending you a fine at under the limit, they sent you a letter under 3mm or so saying your tyres are getting close to bald, sort them out. But I have a feeling this is more about making money.

Near my house I saw an Audi A4 parked up with completely bald front tyres. No sign of tread on the surface, just the faintest imprint at the edges. I bet they're having fun in this weather.

You should see some of the tyres that I see when MOT testing:

Had this beauty in:

This was in for its first MOT and it's not a light or slow car either. The offside front tyre (not pictured) was the same as the nearside front.

The sidewalls split on these as well:

Worn balljoint(s) and/or rod ends?

Nothing worn apart from the tyres. Jaguars are just heavy on tyres we fail alot of them to the point that VOSA start asking questions, we don't fit or supply our local dealer with tyres so we have nothing to hide. It does give me some job satisfaction in knowing that they will be replaced and I'm happy that I won't be paying the bill.

First MOT - if it's a low mileage user perhaps historically they have lasted on single set.

My dad's S Type used to eat tyres so can concur.
