Lambda sensor failure again

Featured Replies

Hi,

My EML came on the other day and turned out to be my O2 sensor number 1. I replaced this and the car was fine and no faults. 2 days later its back on.

What could this be? Surely I haven't broken another sensor so quick

Probably not - my Mark 1 Octavia ended up running with the EML light on all the time because the sensor would pick up condensation and trigger the EML - it would be reset at a service and within 150 miles be back on. After several abortive attempts to stop it happening (including two replacement sensors in a week) I ended up living with it to the point that the EML went out once and I panicked and rushed it straight in to be checked. :giggle:

Could it be the cold that we have at the minute then causing issues?

What's vag com saying??

O2 sensor 1 bank 1 failure

I would say, remove it,and look from physical damage....Is more likely instalation failure.I've seen that on an aftermarte sensor, wich was bigger in body it crashed during the instalation

Worth trying

It was a VAG sensor that was for by my mechanic. Car drives fine so not sure

May have an airleak or faulty maf sensor or second probe might be faulty

Check the wires on it. Sounds a bit odd for 2 to go.

Check for any cracks in the exhaust manifold or exhaust flexi hose....any air leak within the exhaust/manifold will cause the EML to flag up the pre-cat O2 sensor...

Other avenues to explore:

1) Check it's not running too rich.

2) Any misfires?

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

I dont think there is any cracks in the exhaust however i do seem to be using slightly more fuel and i have a slight stutter sometimes. I know that both these things can be effected when the o2 sensor is faulty.

No more error codes just the o2 sensor one

what about 002 in VAG COM? For ages my MAF would not function, changed it, and now everything is ok, had the light on for 3 years!!!

Going to get vag com on it instead but the garage one is a £15k piece of kit. Gould of told me what's right.

Maybe ill swap the MAF over as I have a spare

my mates 1.8T (not vrs) had similar just before the mot about a month ago. being the tightarses he and I am I took out the lambda wire brushed it, using the drill with attachment, then heated it up till it was glowing red, (blowlamp) then refitted. Its been fine for the last 1000 miles. (lucky) My vrs was doing similar and repeated the process on my Sensor (after cat) and he presto thats now been fine too.

Spoke to the mot garage i use and apparently they try the same approach for like minded skin flints!

Could this be the same on two sensors though? I may give it a go as there is no harm in trying.

Very annoying as fuel consumption is now 23mpg instead of 30

Two sensors gone in a short space of time?, the odds of that are a bit high. Have you had any engine work done where a silicone based sealer has been used, have you sprayed any silicone within the engine bay? - silicone can kill O2 sensors.

A genuine one will have a 2 year warranty, it's possible that you just got a bad one.

The code and the text of the fault would be useful in determining if it's an actual sensor fault.

Used no silicone at all. Goin on vag com tonight so will hopefully get a code

cool.

The full vagcom code will shead some more light on it.

  • Author

Well vagcom said the same fault so a brand new sensor was fitted and the code has gone

However today it's back on! Starting to hate the car now

Just because its says its probe dont mean it is,

have you checked intake system for air leaks instead of just keep putting probes into it when prob not that thats at fault

I'm going to clean the MAF shortly and see if I have any air leaks.

The first sensor I used was second hand but the other was new

Different MAF appears To have fixed it. Fingers crossed

problem solved ;-)

It only came on once when I put the V-Power petrol but now is gone again. I had a really dirty MAF because of the oil etc, I gave it a good clean and is good as new
