Cars of Eastern Europe by Andy Thompson

Featured Replies

Wow, that is the best thing I've seen on YouTube. Looks like the only car you'd ever need. Looks a bit tail happy to say the least! Love the bright colours too, you normally only see them in black.

Loved that film of the 603 but I doubt motoring was so rosy and carefree in Communist Czechoslovakia.

Stunning looking car, couldn't help noticing that just before the passengers got out, it came to a halt like a rocking chair!?

from 2:10 looks like Richard Hammond driving into Chernobyl :D

I remember when I was taken on holiday to the Norfolk Broads in the 1970s whilst at primary school travelling in my teachers pale blue Moscovitch estate! Black vinyl interior. Think it was quite noisy but got there and back okay.

I bought the book several years ago, along with the Russian Cars book, from the same stable. Both are excellent reads and make pertinent comments about the raison d'être for eastern European cars; that they fulfilled a job, without glamour and were hard-working cars. I think I read therein that "the new breed of Skodas are excellent cars, but their heritage is German, not Czech." Sad, but true!

I seem to recall that Moskvich had a good racing record in the UK because the classes were based on price and they had a bigger engine than anything else in their price bracket.
