Does the date of NCB matter?

Featured Replies

This year ive insured two cars in my name and bare with me as this may get confusing.

In 2011 i insured a Clio but canceled the policy a month before it was suppose to expire (dont ask me why i didt just let it run out..) but anyways i was told, 'no the NCB will not be awarded' ok fine was not really bothered but i rang back about half a year later just to esquire about it and i was told yes i do have 1 years NCB from the Clio.

Right so i come to insure the Octavia with the NCB i had from the previous year with the Octavia but was told i cannot add this NCB from the Clio as it was it can not be added together. Right ok thats that.

Insure car number 2, pug and send off proof of NCB (from Clio 2011) they have wrote back today saying that they want NCB from last year (2011-2012, this ive used on the Octy) Why does it matter when the NCB is from? They have also said if you have not had any private motor insurance in 2012 then please put this in writting..once again i dont see what difference it makes.

So overall is the NCB from the Clio now worthless? I dont understand why they cannot use it.

Which company? I knew that after a few years most companies wouldn't accept a NCB but I thought it was more like 5+ that 1!

The company that will not except the NCB is Privilege

I thought total NCB could only be used on one car? Eg, I've got 3 years, and I have to put them all onto either the Polo or the 330, I can't put 1 year on the Polo, 2 on the 330 (which is what you're trying to do I think?)

So maybe the question to them should be, can they reduce your policy taking the Clio NCB into account too?

It reads to me like Ema has her xx years NCB on her octavia then a separate 1 years NCB from the Clio.

I thought that if you left NCB idle for a year it becomes un-usable. May be completely wrong.

Depends on the company, but as per my link the company in question accepts up to two years

The time frame is set by each insurer and generally speaking most will allow you to comeback to them longer than a new company.

I believe it's a 2 year industry standard before they run out

Eg - I'm insured with direct line and if I stopped as long as I went back to them within 3 years hey would accept their own NCB. If I went to a different co. over 2 years they would refuse.

You can have as many sets of discount as cars you own but as already said above, can only use 1 set on 1 car

IE if you waned to insured a 2nd car for the first time you would have to start a new set of NCB for that car (unless your current co. will do you a deal as direct line would)

Jars got it right as I understand it too.

Yeah thats right, sorry if its confusing as its confusing me! So i bought and insured the Octy in 2011 with 0 NCB, re-insured 2012 with the 1 NCB i have just earned.

About 2 month before buying the Octy i got rid of the Clio, unaware that i have earned the 1 NCB when i insured the Octy.

I didnt think you could earn NCB on 2 separate policies in your own name? You can only have one set of NCB.

You can have/build up as many sets as you like but can only use 1 set of bonus against 1 policy at a time

I`m not aware of anything stopping you from earning as many separate NCB as you like. When I get a second car I`m certainly not going to be paying "no NCB" premiums forever on one of the cars!

Rung them yesterday, massive waste of time. Oh yes Miss thats all fine ill just put on your account that you are using the other NCB on another car....i put this in writting on the proof of NCB..idiots

As far as Privilege is concerned, 11 months is not a year. Most insurers can check NCB electronically. The insurer of the Clio may be willing to offer you 1 year NCB, but Privilege will still only see 11 months. It's the same as with bonus accelerators

I didn't think you had a choice? If you find out otherwise I'd be interested in knowing how to get around it!

How`d do you mean? If I start a policy in January for a second car, it`ll start a new "group" of NCB. I`ll continue to use my original NCB on the fabia (4 or 5 years now). But after a year of starting the new policy I`ll have 1 years NCB to use on a second policy. Or am I looking at things to simply? My dad has several motorbikes, one has his full NCB on the policy, then another toy has 2 or 3 NCB on it. Assumed it`d be the same for cars.

My understanding was that I've got two policies, Polo and BMW. I get NCB from them both, but can only use the total NCB on one car at a time. So I could only get the reduction on one the cars. On the bright side, this was my first year with two cars, so I've not lost out yet at least!

That Wiki answers thing is good looking news though! Come renewal I'll need to enquire into this.

I've worked in the insurance game for 10 years now, including 5 in motor insurance.... I can assure you everything I have stated above is factual and current!
