Does anyone change their own winter tyres at home?

Featured Replies

I decided that all season tyres would be a good comprimise in this country. Something like Goodyear Vector 4 Season

There is a good youtube video that tests this sort of tyre out and concludes that it is better year round for cornering and grip and only looses out on straight line stopping distance.

Never bothered with Winter tyres before last year as had always managed without and had regularly driven on snow in the North of Scotland. Got a set for the new vRS, mainly as we had struggled with the wife's Avensis the year before (big wide tyres and lots of torque) when it was really bad, so wanted a bit more grip for the power and DSG box. Last year really didn't need them as it was certainly realistic to adjust driving to keep the summer tyres going, however they do make a great difference to the grip and feeling of the car in our wet and cold conditions. Really hoping for a bit of snow this year to see how they handle in that.

For those that dismiss them, such as Greenline 11(who doesn't appear to have risked a second post), they are not anymore of a waste than any other adjustment you make, some are practical some are personal choices. If you don't want to do it then don't do it, but then don't complain that I stopped too quickly when you run into the back of me with your Summer tyres sliding along the road!

i went to the local fitters to have mine put on last week, i dont really trust the daft little car jack and it was too bloody cold anyways so i loaded them up and offski i went

ill probably remove them myself once it warms up and for the record i felt much more assured with these on last year than the contis, placebo or not i dont care and ill keep using these until i switch the car

I just keep my Tyres and swop them (£40) in November ...onto my OE alloys , Just sold my part worn summers on eBay , and will buy a nice new set of federal RSR's for next summer :) ( and put my winters back in storage)

Well girls it looks like your winters will be needed before the end of the week

Been snowing 3 days on the trot up here in Bonny Dundee. Main roads are ok as expected but the little streets and B roads are another story.

I'm waiting until it really comes down then I'll conquer the biggest drivable hill up here, just to be a smug ***** on facebook :p

.......i thought ill try and save a few quid ,soi tried to jack up the car..... but the little car jack although it went higher and higher itself under the car ,i felt on the other hand that the fabia estate was not going upwards.. but kind of sidewards ,so i ended going to the local fitters, not shore if i was doing something wrong?

Where did you place the jack to do that?

i put the jack according to where the book say... under the sides where the small triangle markings are,had the same markings on my old VW polo.

......never had a problem though changing the wheels for my little old VW polo :) ,jacked the car in no time ,removed the wheel and on went the winter one.

......with the new bigger car after jacking it abit i ,ikind of got a bit of a chicken ,as i really had to wind the jack alot compared to the old car ,is that normal?

Got the garage to fit the rubber to the rims, then swapped the wheels over myself.

Used my modded hockey puck and 3 ton trolley jack. Oh and the torque wrench got an outing too. Took the opportunity to de-crapify the wheel arches while I was there.

Snowing this morning in Guildford. Won't last but if and when it comes down thicker I'm sorely tempted to go out in it....!
