Rattling came chain, Fabia 1.2 TSI 2012/2013

Featured Replies

Earlier this week i went and picked up my brand new Skoda Fabia 1.2 TSI.

Im quite happy with it but i noticed a rattling sound that appears after revving the engine and while the revs drop i hear it.

My first thoughts was that it could be a loose heatshield around the exhaust system that vibrates, but today i went in to my local Skoda garage and some mechanics went out to listend to the noice.

Apparently it sounds as if my brand new car, built end of week 44 2012, suffers from the exact same problem as the first 1.2 TSI engines with rattling cam chains.. Their advice was to run the car for another 1000km, since its only done 360km right now, and pay attention to the sound especially on cold starts since it could improve over time. If it stays the same or gets worse they will have to replace the tensioner..

Is there anyone here that have had a 1.2 TSI with a rattling cam chain?

When was the car built?

How did they fix it? Is it just to replace the tensioner or should i opt for tensioner and chain?

Thanks for your reply!

At what mileage did you notice that it sounded odd?

It feels quite strange to keep driving when they know where the sound comes from.

Did they try and replace your tensioner at first? Then proceeded with the timing chain when it didnt help?

theres been a few had new chains on....

Yeah ive understood that from googling and searching some..

But why did they replace the chains? From my understanding this sound appears with a faulty chain tensioner. Then why doesnt it stop when they replace the tensioner?

Did they replace the chain at once or did they start with replacing the tensioner and then when the rattling was still there they changed the chain?

The chain may have been damaged due to the faulty tensioner ?

The mileage was about 8K when the noise came up. The noise was coming only on cold start, first tensioner was changed but no success.

After chain replace no issue, no sound since 8 months and 1500 miles.

Dealer said "A batch of faulty timing chains" :)

I do recall from my stint at the dealers there was a a re call regarding cam chain on the 1.2 TSI. The only one i saw go through the workshop was a Yeti
