Brakes, visit workshop

Featured Replies

Hello,

"Brakes, visit workshop"

had this message appear on the maxidot. First time couple of days ago appeared for about 3seconds, but as I was avoiding car in narrow street, I quite didn't catch what it said. Today it appeared again during normal driving. First time and today no reason why it should appear. I am not even sure if I was trying to slow down it that moment.

Brakes are functioning normally, tried emergency stop...no problem. No knocking noises or vibrations. No warning lights ...everything is working as it should.

Any idea why this warning message should show on maxi dot??? Could it be some debris on the brakes?

Don't fancy taking in now to dealership as my local one is not very good and place where I bought the car is quite far.

Ah...almost forgot. The car is 3months old 2012 Octavia vRS TSI

Thanks for any suggestions.

Might mean the pads are worn low but not likely on a new car unless you've been have loads of track days or done 80k miles...

What does the manual say?

s

check the brake fluid level on the master cylinder

I will check the brake fluid level tomorrow then. But if it was low I think warning light should come on.

Had a look in the manual but it doesn't say anything about the warning message...just about warning lights which I didn't experience.

Pads shouldn't be worn. Driving car normally for about 2300miles....some fast driving and hard braking on street (no track days) but nothing what could wear the pads out so quickly.

Corroded/faulty brake-pad sensor?

Now that's a possibility. I do wash my wheels once every week and if I don't drive straight after wash I do get rusty like patches on the brake discs. They disappear as soon as I drive somewhere, because of the friction, but I guess there is no way how the sensor would clean up.

Wife's A-class had this about 1k miles after having breaks done, garage re-seated the sensors and no problem since.

Might just be a slipped sensor.

Seems unlikely the pads are worn that quickly, but it has been known if the caliper has become stuck. I have seen brakes worn down to the backing pad and still work.

Maxidot is where the ecu communicates with you. It only knows what the sensors tell it. At the moment, the signal is "something" is out of tolerance.

Presuming the sensor works by being shorted to earth (rather than some devilish module controlled thing) when the pads are sufficiently worn, ie the wire is live, then perhaps a bit of damage or rubbing somewhere?

Or a fault anywhere between the sensor and the ecu/module.

As it is so new, and brakes I 'd have it checked by the nearest dealer. It may/most likely some thing simple as others have suggested, in which case how much of a mess can they make? Or identify/fail to identify a more serious problem, if so then take it to your preferred dealer.
