TWANG from rear. Not a spring

Featured Replies

Yesterday I heard a loud twang from the rear left of the car so I drove straight to my trusty local garage who put on the ramp thinking what I described was a spring. He could find nothing wrong with any of the springs. When leaving the garage the car made the twang again.

If its not a spring what else could it be?

This is totally weird, last week i had the same noise was on a car park going out it and heard it... a few times!, shocked i stopped as i thought my exhaust had fell off lol.

Couldnt see anything anyway its been fine until this morning around 6am leaving said car park again it made the noise, i initially put it down to stones hit the stone guard at the back.... but i've never in my life heard it and now it appears several times!.

Hoping tomorrow i can get it washed and get the rear wheel off for a good look.

Mine makes the noise when turning hard right. Obviously pushing the rear left side down. This is why I thought it was a spring. Are your turning sharply when leaving the car park??

No its a very slight bend to the left, then right at the round about, the twang noise happened twice while going slight left on the bend and again turning right, ive never heard it on the road though and thats doing sharp turns so i'm hoping it is stone hitting the guard.

Are you sure it isn't a broken spring?

The pig tails tend to snap off (the last inch of the spring).

As it sits in the metal cup it is therefore very hard to see.

Have had this with a small stone caught between turns of the spring.

Speaking of stones, have you ever heard the noise a stone makes when it hits off the brake disc shield

Never heard it before so cant comment on what its like so i'm slightly puzzled if mines is stones as it only happens when leaving the works carpark and not on the road lol.

HELP! lol, whats it like?

The mechanic seemed quite sure all springs were fully intact, no sharp edges he was under the car for 45mins with mirrors a torche and some other tools. He raised the car up on a ramp and then lifted the back end whilst in the ramp and the wheels dropped exposing the springs more. He did mention was difficult to see. But he couldn't see any broken ends.

I've just returned home and heard the noise again, It's fair to say I got some marks on my undies afterwards. What a noise it makes.

It's booked in on the 17th hopefully a fault will be detected.

Does your car zenon headlights on it, could it be the resr sensor on the rear arm seizing up ???

Could it be a sticking hand brake lever on the calliper, the lever not returning to the stop when released.

I will mention this to mechanic. I honestly wouldn't know where to begin looking.

The vary last half an inch or inch of the spring can be a pain to see, it sits in a plastic/foam end and the do rust up there.

Are the spring seats OK?

A loud twang sounds like a broken spring or a spring not located in the seat correctly.

Yes as wary said the bit that sits inside the rubber might be gone. I have some Vrs springs 4 free perfect if it is the springs

Well a quick update

The car has been in the garage all day and the back end stripped down and no fault could be found. Everything is as should be whole suspension and rear assembly was checked. Brakes were stripped cleaned and put back and there is still a twang when turning hard right. 3 mechanics are puzzled. Anyone got any suggestion were to look next??
