New brakes needed

Featured Replies

So after a twang was heard in my car last week i had the car fully checked over. Turns out my rear discs are warped causing them to catch the brake pad squeal bar causing the twang.

I called Skoda Aberdeen who quoted £418 for discs and pads all round.

This seems quite a reasonable price for all four corner. I was going to source the parts myself and get a local garage to carry out the work. However they asked £100 for labour which leaves £318 to buy discs and pads. Is it possible to get decent brake setup for that price. What do you recommend??

I have heard good reports about MTEC disks on other forums. Reasonable prices i.e. full set of drilled and grooved disks complete with pads for my astravan were approx £160.

It would be worth a look.

I got a full set of brembo discs & pads all round from apbrakediscs.co.uk, use discount code iluvhoses to an extra 15% off. I think I paid about £165 for the full set and they do free Postage.

Replacing discs and pads is sooo easy to do.

+1 and much cheaper than what you've been quoted.

I'm not a trained mechanic nor am I in a trade, but still found it easy to do

In wish i had facilities to change my self is save me a fortune. Just no where to jack the car up without getting in the way of something.

**** a brick £300!

I think I got the whole lot for about £200 from ECP and fitted for about £75 and I didn't take the cheapest options.

Thanks folks

I go a research all of these options and post my findings for future brake buyers.

I bought front and rear Pagid discs and pads from Euro Car Parts for £156 all in. If you don't have any tools though, factor in another £120 for the good quality basics to do the job so £100 to your local garage isn't the end of the world.

+1 I was going to do it myself too but the costs of the tools ended up getting close to the price of paying someone to do it. Turned out the rear carriers were a total pig to get off even for the mechanic so I wouldn't have managed anyway.

I have watched/helped my mechanic change my rear pads on my Skoda and a Seat Toledo V5 I used to own.....................I wouldn't wish it on an enemy!!

Also,Opie oils where running a promo on Ferodo brake products, I don't know if it's still on but worth a check.

The rears can be a pain, I would let the garage do it and source the parts from ECP

Some one mentioned Opie were doing a deal on Ferodo. Ferodo are a good brand name. Been about for years.

Ok so i have been on the net for a short while and here are my findings on prices for a front and rear discs with pads.

www.apbrakediscs.co.uk for Brembo Discs & Pads = £148.28 usings "iluvhoses" promotional code.

www.mtecbrakes.co.uk for Dimpled and Grooved Discs & Mintex Pads = £184.61

www.eurocarparts.com for Pagid Discs & Pads = £168.10 using "PARTS25" promotional code for 25% discount in December only.

www.opieoils.co.uk for Ferodo Discs & Pads = £226.78

www.gsfcarparts.com Discs & Pads classed as "premium" = £164.94

www.ebcbrakesdirect.com for EBC Discs & Greenstuff Pads = £296.78

All these prices are based on brake size

Front Disc

Vented - Diameter: 312 Thickness: 25 Minimum Thickness: 23 Height: 50 Bore Diameter: 65 Studs: 5

Rear Disc

Solid - Diameter: 286 Thickness: 12 Minimum Thickness: 10 Height: 48 Bore Diameter: 65 Studs: 5

Hopefully you will find this of some use, but the best deal seems to be apbrakes, however, dimpled and grooved discs maybe a consideration from MTEC. Ive not had any expeirence with dimpled and grooved discs so who knows...

Speaking from experience with the Vrs? I've done my fair share over the years on the cars I've owned and earlier this year I did the discs/pads all round on my Vrs (went with Ferodo all round, when Opie still had the promo going). The rear discs were a right ******* pain in the arse to do. Getting at the rear caliper bolts was a bloody joke.

Taking the rear caliper off isn't that bad tbh, winding back the pistons can be hard work, I ended up putting a socket onto the caliper winder and nearly popped a hernia but it didn't take that long.

These will more than likely be Jurid, Brembo or similar known brand ("Premium" pads I bought from GSF were Brembo, I believe Jurid are OE).

there is a lot of choice out there mate and you have already done your homework, but a lot depends on for me how hard you are going to use them if you drive quite fast and use them heavy then one of the premium brands would be a better choice, if you just mingle along and dont stomp on them a cheaper set will do.

I have ebc redstuff front and rear and standard ebc discs, i wanted to upgrade my brakes a little after a remap and these certainly help also the reduction in brake dust is good too (unfortunately i have warped them after stomping on them after trying to outrun a bike carbed mk1 golf gti).

in the past i have fitted ferodo premier pads to my cars and will be fitting them to my wifes mini very soon. the pagid set up from ecp would be a good choice also.

just looking back at the options get the pagid discs from ecp and the ferodo premier pads

as for fitting you will need the caliper rewind tool and the m14 splined bit to remove the rear carriers, i did mine on the drive but you need the back end up as high as possible to get a power bar in, as the only place you can get at them is from straight underneath.

take it to the independent for £100 , its very cold at this time of year doing home mechanics

an independent did my rear ones for £40 with parts supplied by myself, as it was a pig to get the rear carrier bolts off

The rear disks are impossible on jacks, without a lot of arsing around. Getting a breaker bar on is hard enough, never mind turning it.

Certainly pay somebody to do the rears unless you like cursing.

Use code pagid30 for 30 % off ecp :)

I do brake late and hard it's been pointed out by SWMBO many time. Any thoughts on discs that are drilled/grooved/dimpled??

Absolute doddle for me, i have the right tools (not saying you dont far from it) so makes things easier.
