I've got the New Octavia 1.9Tdi Elegance, almost a year old, and it's now done close to 7K miles. Recently, I've noticed a kinda whining noise at low speeds (around 20-30mph) and low revs (1.5-3K) when the car is cold. Seems to disappear once the car's reached optimum temp. Anyone else noticed it ?

I thought it may be the turbo, but why now ?

Can anyone help with this query?

I've an old version 1.9Tdi Elegance and assume the engine's the same - it certainly does the same thing. It's definitely the turbo adjusting its blade angles (the difference between the 90bhp and the 110bhp engine is that the latter has a variable turbo) - perhaps it works over a wider range of adjustment when it's cold. Why it should come on only after a year I can't suggest, but I wouldn;t worry about it - comforting to know it's still doing what it should.

Time to worry is when you put your foot down to accelerate and - nothing. No turbo boost, which can be worrying. Usually the mass air flow sensor throwing a wobbly and (prsumably) going into safe mode. Stopping, switching the ignition off and restarting resets the software, but it's irritating. Have had mine replaced once, but it did it again a few months ago. Seems to be brought on by full acceleration before the engine has warmed up fully.

All of which suggests Skoda need to get some better hardware and software!

Can you hear the whine when the windows are all closed or only if there is an open window or sunroof? BTW this a serious question and I am not thinking it might be wind noise.

I get a whining noise from the passenger seat of the vRS if I try them

I get a whining/whistling noise from the turbo on the 110 TDI in my A6 when the engine is cold. The only time I really notice it is after a cold start at home when I get out of the car to shut the drive gate. Once back in the car with the door shut and windows closed I can't hear it. After your post I tried driving off with the window open and I could still hear it while the engine was cold but once warmed through it was silent. This is the original turbo and is 5 years and 56k old and, touch wood, has been no trouble.

I had a 110 bhp 1.9 TDI Ocky Mk1. Near on 80,000 when traded in last September for a 1.9 TDI Ocky MK 2.

No problems with the engine at all during that period. The Turbo was noticable on odd occasions.

Hope this is even more reassuring.

How do you find the performance between the two cars? Thinking of going the same way myself but the Octy2 is 5bhp down and heavier so just wondering how the Octy2 1.9PD105 feels compared to the Octy1 1.9TDi110?

Back on topic,

My 1.9 also whines but can only really hear it with the windows down.

My old Scooby's turbo used to whine like mad and was OK after 60k miles at 270bhp

I have not really noticed any significant difference. The general feel of the Mk2, roadholding driving position etc is far superior to the Mk1 and I have no regrets about making the change.

I had a 2.0 TDI on loan, as other members have said it goes like the clappers and is fun to drive.

I suggest you try to test both and then decide.

The fuel economy of the 2.0TDi is putting me off and I would be able to get a higher spec 1.9 for the same money.

Would probably end up with a tuning box on the 1.9 anyway.

I would certainly go for the 2.0TDI, I have a 1.9TDI MKII now, and I'm already regretting not having bought a 2.0. Ok, the 2.0 is more expensive, and has a higher tax rate her in belgium, but I feel that it's a totally different car. The 1.9 does it's job fine, but the 2.0 does it better (and I think more quietly too...).

I don't have the whining noise as described in this thread, but I'm only at 3000 miles atm.

Since when? This is the first I've ever heard that 90s were/are VVT. I have driven many miles behind 1992 & 1995 90s and nothing about their behaviour suggested to me they had VVTs. I have also driven many miles behind a 2000MY 110 which definitely has VVT characteristics as it should and relatively few miles behind a 2000 90 which on thinking about I am not sure of but lean towards non VVT for that one as well. These are all Audis.

Dont know who is right but I believe this was clarified by one of the Skoda technicians who posts on briskoda.

Noises mean different things to different people

I always think turbos "whistle" just like the turbines on a jet engine, that really high pitched noise thats right at the top of most peoples hearing spectrum.To be honest i like heering the turbo whistle but i have never heard it at all on mine :confused:

I wonder if the "moaning" is the fuel pump? My engine makes a sort of moaning niose onlt audible at lowish revs, wonder if this is the same?
