High Tired

Featured Replies

Has anybody put higher profile tyres on the Fabia? I know the obsession these days is for the lowest profile possible that only hold a teaspoon of air, but I am more interested in ride quality and having tyres that protect the alloy rims from kerbing, also I think 205/50 or 205/55/16 would fill the vRS arches better, has anybody tried this.

Well, I've ran a Fabia on 185/60 R14s OK, and comfort is good over potholes and the like, BUT when running lots of power through them they spin everywhere (may be due to lower width & less grippy tyres) and the same goes for cornering. Sidewall flex and a general lack of grip is their downside.

However, you get fantastic economy on them!

Also you speedo would be out with higher profile tyres.

I know this is an old thread but it's something I've been thinking about recently. I think the vRS would feel more settled and less bumpy with slightly higher profile tyres, plus it may help reduce the tyre noise a bit. I also think it'll help traction at the expense of some steering sharpness. I reckon 205/55/16 would be ok. I suppose my insurance company will object given the car hasn't been approved to use a non-standard tyre. I've read that the Polo GT-tdi used 205x55x16 tyres so maybe it'd be ok?

Thats the tyres I've got on my GTI, and they are great fun, easy to get sideways, and the softness of the tyres compensates for the firm suspension, so you get the best of both worlds

I reckon the Furby should have had lower, harder suspension, and had slightly higher profile tyres, and i think it might have handled better.

The Polo GT does infact have the same tyres and wheel size as the Fabia vRS, and so does the Ibiza FR for that matter, anything else is a misprint from a lazy journalist. The earlier Polo Sports had 15 inch alloys, which would have better ride quality but handling was pretty average at best on these things. I'm afraid putting anything on with a higher profile on your stock wheels would be a big mistake. You could try putting 15 inch wheels on a vRS but I doubt they'd clear the brakes properly.

I reckon Eibachs and 205/50 tyres could work from a styling point of view: Slight lowering, plus a slight increase in the wheel/tyre diameter to fill the arches better.

You can get Advans and D01Js in 205/50 too... According to Camskill. :D

Maybe not an idea with Winter approaching.
