1.9TDi Power Steering Problem - Battery?

Featured Replies

Hello All

I've started having problems with my power steering on my 04 Fabia 1.9TDi

On cold mornings the power steering doesn't seem to work (sometimes the light comes on other times it's just heavy), but running it for a couple of minutes and then turning the ignition on and off seems to resolve it.

I'm assuming my battery is probably knackered and it's not producing enough volts to start the power steering up properly while starting the car.

I've heard the Fabia battery is a bit underspecified. Is it worth me buying a big daddy Bosch one?

Have a quick search on the forum, power steering faults have been well covered and discussed in the past. My fault was the angle sensor but is it could be a number of other things, battery, cracked flat fuses on top of the battery, bad earth, low fluid (pita to get to), corroded connectors, leaking rack etc. If you haven't already spent £5 on a generic lead from ebay/amazon and downloaded the free copy of VCDS to read the fault codes now would be a good time as it may give you a clue, if it doesn't it's still well worth the minimal investment.

The PAS will behave as you have stated when the battery is on it's way out. The PAS light will appear well before the car becomes sluggish/fails to start. A nice new Bosch battery did the trick for me and cleared the fault immediately :)

mine did this from year 3 the same batt' might just make it's 10th anniverary next Feb'
