1.8Tsi not smooth

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Had the car for about a month now and although very pleased with it I can't seem to get away smoothly from 1st gear. When pulling away in 1st using about 1500-2000rpm and once the clutch is is fully released there is a dead spot until you depress more of the gas and then starts pulling forward, otherwise if you use more gas say about 2500-3000rpm you get wheel spin! All through the other gears are smooth even getting down and pulling away in second at about 10mph.

Also when I picked up the car I noticed there was slight engine hesitation (Jerky) on take up through the gears (dead smooth at idle) but since filling up a few times with Esso (95 Ron) it has improved thinking that maybe the previous owner put supermarket petrol in, but just filled up with Shell (95) and noticed the hesitation is back, so just wondering if an injector is blocked and if you can use an injector cleaner or is this a no-no, but appreciate any thoughts.

What did you have before?

My Octavia 1.8 TSi took a bit of getting used to but I came from a diesel BMW.

Once I was used to it it was fine.

I have this very same thing with my 1.8TSI Superb and have had it from day one mine rolled out from shop. I think it is just a way of the 1.8TSI engine and you get used to it. I dont even notice it anymore.

Yes must admit my previous 3 cars in the last 8 years were diesels 2 being automatics but had several petrol manual cars before that but not a turbo! Is what I described above, turbo lag?

But otherwise very pleased with it and at the moment experimenting with different fuels to compare mpg figures...

Cheers

Don't know about the 1.8 i have the 2.0 and it runs a lot better on super 97RON. On the petrol filler it says "minimum 95RON" so tried super and never looked back. With 95 I always felt I needed to be a bit heavy footed to get it going but with super it's a different animal. I know super is dearer but in the long run I suspect it no more expensive as I can use a lighter foot.....and yes it's smoother.

I understand that high octane fuel is also beneficial to the running of the engine.

On the filler cap on the 1.8Tsi it says, 91/95 RON. In the handbook page 199 it goes on to say;

Unleaded petrol with higher octane number

You can make unlimited use of unleaded petrol which has a higher octane number than the one prescribed

On Vehicles with prescribed unleaded petrol 95/91 RON, the use of petrol with a higher octane number than 95 RON does not result in a noticeable power increase or a lower fuel consumption.

Prescribed fuel - unleaded petrol 98/95 RON (Which I assume is for 2.0ltr engines)!

Use unleaded fuel with the octane rating 98 RON. You can also use unleaded petrol 95 RON, but this leads to a slight loss in performance.

In case of necessity, you can refuel with petrol with a lower rating 91 RON of unleaded fuel with octane rating 98 RON or 95 RON is not available. You must continue driving at medium engine speeds and minimum load. Etc...

Although the book tells you to use 95 Ron for the 1.8 engine there would be no harm in trying the super petrols 97/98 RON for a few tanks just to see if there would be any noticeable improvements in engine smoothness or performance then refilling with 95 RON to compare!

Well, I do find this engine a bot lazy until 2k rpm. I've changed from 140HP petrol Vectra. However I got used to it and it seems OK. Until I need to reverse uphill... I just hate reversing this car uphill - it needs ~2k rpm otherwise it tries to stall. So I either reverse quickly or with a clutch pedal half depressed :wall:

Try doing what it recommends in the Owner's Manual for a manual gearbox car, namely:

- Drive no more than about one length of your vehicle in first gear.

- Shift up into the next higher gear at approx 2000 to 2500 rpm.
