Oil Smell from exhaust

Featured Replies

just had an oil change (same time as pick up pipe was replaced) never noticed any loss of oil, but if I go for a spirited drive when I get out I can smell oil from the exhaust, car doesn't appear smokey. But does feel strained under acceleration, especially 2nd gear around 45-50. is there anything I should be checking for, or anything i can check myself, or should I just stop worrying and get on with driving...

Too much oil???? It's gotta go somewhere

Check your oil level, sounds like oil is entering the combustion chamber. Usual cause if it was not a problem before is overfilling causing crankcase pressure build up. If this is the case then it needs to be sorted ASAP, since leaving it could cause failure of oil seals as the pressure has to go somewhere and the seals are the weakest link.

I had noticed the smell before I had the oil change, but was hoping an oil change would of helped, the previous oil was proper filthy so I had put it down to that for some reason

Checked oil and its just on the max line,

it might be the turbo...

it might be the turbo...

I drove it today, treated it very softly, steady acceleration, and cruising at 70 down motorways, when I stopped I sniffed the exhaust pipe (much to the wife's amusement) no smell at all, so it seems its only smelly if I thrash it, does that sound turbo related,

yes it might be,I'm not sure.

To confirm you have one option, remove the 3 bolts where the downpipe meets the turbo...if is oily inside, you know the answer

I would monitor oil usage for a month or so and see how much if any that its using

Iv just replaced my turbo and in the end i was topping my oil up all the time, about a cup full every 2 weeks. Lucky i just kept taking it from work so it didn't cost me anything! Turbo did tho :(

This is what worries me the most, how much roughly are we talking if my Turbo is gone ? im guessing theres no cheap fix to it either

I will try Volvomegs idea first, as its the easiest, especially in this weather

I will start doing that now, and hope for the best

Yea thats what i did, kept check on usage for a couple month's then i went and spoke to R-tech who aint that far from me and they confirmed it was the turb. If so I might be able to help as i have got my old turbo cleaned up and ready for either a upgrade or new seals sitting at work. I payed £650 for new turbo (2 years warr), £200 fitting and £75 new TIP. It hurt a little.
