Superb I - Gearbox ECU

Featured Replies

My 2006 2.8 Tiptronic Superb Elegance was off the road for November, took it in for MOT on 3rd December 2013. It passed. The next day it went into "limp" mode, with gearbox lever jamming. Booked it into main dealers for next day diagnostics. Before I could get it to the garage the gear lever completely jammed and I was unable to get any gears whatsoever. It was revealed that the main ECU which controls the gearbox had burnt out, probably caused by water ingress. I have now had to wait 2 weeks for part and hopefully I might get the car back before Christmas. Apparently this is a rare problem especially for a car with just 49,000 on the clock. Skoda Factory and Skoda Public Relations do not want to know, as the car is over 5 years. Has anyone else had this problem? and any comments.

could the ecu be repaired for a fraction of the cost?

My dads auto box did this ill find the name of the firm that repaired the Ecu.

I can believe that, my car was letting in a tiny bit via the bottom of the driver's door seal - glad I caught it in time; the gearbox ECU (TCM) is in a plastic tub in the (UK) drivers side footwell. In the US where the cars are mainly auto (and their pollen filter is on the UK drivers side, together with the TCM) I think it is quite a common failure (in fact, a class action suit happened over water ingress breaking TCMs and wiring looms). Some notes here:

If it is thought to be water ingress, then just fixing the TCM is a bit of a waste of money unless you know the leaks have gone - they don't tend to fix themselves, only get worse! If it is water damage it should be obvious to the eye of someone sensible - look for corroded terminals on connectors, a bit of dirt under the carpet, etc.

There are other routes on driver's side to get water under the carpet, too - such as the bonnet pull cable and the engine ECU "sealed" box. Hope you get it sorted!
