Galaxy s3 sudden death

Featured Replies

Anyone else had this? I read about it a couple of days ago and then last night my s3 just died. Can't turn it on or anything. It's away for repair but it will be Thursday before they even pick it up from the shop due to the holidays

Hope you had a backup to mem card, else it'll come back blank

Bad luck....I have one..Warranty covered thankfully

Hope you didn't lose too much data

It's why I won't buy a mobile without mem card slot

Oo-er, First time I've heard of this. I normally do back up's the end of each week anyway (Habit! Not just the phone!) So not too much to worry about.

Was it running a custom ROM or out the box?

If only you had an apple, would be a straight swap in store...just adding some fuel ready for an upcoming fire :D

On a serious note, thank goodness for the automated remote backups most smartphones do nowadays! It sucks to be without a phone so long too :(

I tried to go without a phone for a week... I managed one day... :drunk:

It was stock, running jelly bean. I think three would send it for repair even if it had been an apple. Samsung are reported to be replacing them without question too. Its just going to take a while due to the holiday period. Bit odd though that I'd heard of this but none of the guys in the shop had.

Can't fault three's service though i walked out with a fully charged loan phone which is as well as I'm away for Christmas and my dad's in hospital so i need a phone.

Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

I updated to that and it became really buggy and slow :S

So then I played with custom ROMs. So now I'm running JellyBam 3.1.0

mine did this and I had to remove the battery and put it back in to get it to work as no amount of button combinations worked. I also noticed that the gps was slow in locking on and that although I had full signal strength, it struggled on web browsing etc...

I got rid of mine and now have a HTC 8X windows phone which seems faster and smoother

Mine had no issues at all. Tried different batteries and chargers. Nothing worked.

Exactly why I'd never have one, its a nice thought of maybe owing one but this just puts me off.

Was it the recent 4.1.2 upgrade?

Iv heard a few roumers of this, its a wicked upgrade, mine has been working fine since yesterday but the new features have slowed it down a little.

Not enough to bother me becuase i can run 2 apps at the same time now :) (on the same screen)

Good to hear they are fixing it.

Bad luck but at least it is being sorted and thanks to the cloud you can get some of your stuff back. Just a PITA short term.

No idea, but the reports on the Web suggest it's a board fault

Apple will exchange in any Apple store, does not matter where it was purchased. Walk in with old broken phone, walk out with working phone. Does not matter if its networked locked, sim free etc. the serial number and when it was activated is known by Apple for all iPhones, so no receipt required either.

ah right. Well we don't have an apple store, so if I'd had an apple then Three would have behaved the same as they did with my samsung.

Yes it is true about the sudden death, I have been investigating this as I am expecting one to arrive between xmas & new year.

According to most of the S3 forums, it appears to happen suddenly & without warning, there appears to a couple of common denominators :-

 • It appears to happen during charging as when the indicator shows full, first attempt at use after unplugging & nothing happens.
 • The failures seem to have started at the beginning of November & all the owners got their phones May / June.

Samsung are repairing or replacing under warranty without any arguments, & the odd lucky person has got a 32GB model returned after sending in a 16GB model.

1st thoughts were it was the Jelly Bean upgrade but this has been ruled out as not all failures have had the JB upgrade, afraid its just a case of wait & see if you have one of the phone with the faulty MotherBoard in.

I got mine at easter and it died in my pocket on stand by. The three staff claimed never to have heard about it before (and they all have s3 so looked worried when I told them about it)

Oh dear :( hopefully all yours don't go when you need it most

 • 2 weeks later...

(and they all have s3 so looked worried when I told them about it)

 this makes me laugh  lots!

TBH if the phone is in warranty then there is nothing to worry about really! Samsung have to replace if they cant fix.

Make sure you backup. I use my backup products. If you don't have a micro sd in your phone (like HTC one), then make sure you pull the backup off the phone regularly.

Got a brand new s3 from three this morning. Still on ICS though so I've been downloading updates all day.
