micro SD write protected, but how?

Featured Replies

Trying to format the old 16gb card I had in my 400G (upgraded to 32gb) in my 300G, but my PC won't format it saying its write proteted (Using SDFormatter program) - I am using the USB to SD convertor that came with the cameras, and obviously the same SD to micro SD card in that. There is a "lock" toggle on the SD convertor card, but having in either position doesn't affect the write protection, and also doesn't appear to be locking the micro SD card in (if that's what it's meant to do?)

Any ideas? I could try it in my netbook I suppose which has an actual SD card slot in it.

I was getting this; discovered the slider on the side of the adapter was getting pushed into the lock position by rubbing against the side of the SD slot on my Dell PC everytime I inserted it. Bit of sellotape solved the problem.

Probably not your problem but might be worth checking.

some USB adapters have a size limitation, this may be your problem. Does the PC see the data you have on the card at the moment?

I had a similar problem and ended up sending the card back to Amazon. The new one was fine.

I had been using a a micro SD card to USB adapter supplied with the card. No way to turn on or off protection.

I blame the DR400. We really do need to format the cards on a regular basis or funny things do happen. I did get a DR400 replaced as well under warranty. The replacement was much better behaved than the original one, but I have had mine since they were hot off the (pre?)production line.

The card can be read and I can see all the files in the "record" section. Its not formatting in my netbook either. I just cannot delete any files from the card, or format it. Very odd.

Is this used in a phone (android) if so format it in the phone as sometimes they get a bit messed up and will only format in the phone, once this is done it may well work in the PC as well

It's only ever been in my DR400G. Its quite possible that this card is goosed, as this card was often getting me "please check the SD card" warnings - its one reason I swapped out to a decent spec 32gb card and had no problems at all. The rear facing card has a 4GB card which is perfectly adequate, but I thought it would be good to have a spare.

Is it branded or an eBay fake/special?

Fakes fail like this. There's an app that can check your card

It says Samsung on it. No idea if its a fake or not, but surprised if it is, given it came new with my 400G back in Feb/March time. Actually got me wondering if its still under guarantee?

Could be the adapter is duff, do you have another one or another MicroSD you can try in the same adapter. MicroSD cards cannot be write protected as such, its the adapter that manages this function and if the slider is broken or missing then the PC will not recognise the write function.

I tend to take the write locks off on my adaptors, they always seem to snag.

I do believe for a 32gb limit the card must be an SDXC card in which case incompatible adaptors will only be able to read rather than write.

Alternately the file system used may be incompatible. It should be FAT32 but that isnt always the case, for some weird reason I got given an SD card formatted in NTFS which is fine under windows but read only on macs etc.

I think I have another SD to micro SD adaptor so shall try that first.

Well, it had to be the adaptor. Whilst rummaging I found a tiny micro SD direct to USB dongle widget, and that was able to read and write, so I have formatted the card, which means I at least now have a backup. Surprised the adaptor I last used is dodgy as its a SanDisk one who I think make memory cards too? I'll retain it for spares as it does still at least read.

Chances are that it wasnt compatible with SDXC

16GB MicroSD card is SDHC, the adapter has no electronics and simply makes the electrical connections larger spaced so you can use a SD Card sized slot. The SD/SDHC/SDXC is all handled by the reader itself, not the adapter.

Yes but the microSD in the SD caddy must have then been in an SD card reader which is not supporting SDHC/XC/IO (IO cards are cool but rare, one of my mates had an SDIO bluetooth adaptor but no devices capable of SDIO). This time it seems the microSD is going direct into a reader.

As for 16gb being HC, I misread and assumed we were formatting the 32gb card mentioned for some reason.

The adapter that came with my blackvue was broken so bought another one. Works fine now
