Guys, I'm looking at a new contract, but it's 125miles a day, 30k a year just to get there.. So question is do i flog my scout and get a greenline? No tax, cheaper tyres, better mpg. According to trip the scout does 60mpg on a motorway run... so how much better would the greenline be? Would a fabia be any better? Most of thd journey is fast A roads, dual carrageway and motorway.

Any thoughts welcome.

125 miles per day is about £18 in fuel isn't it? Even if you're working every day I only make that £7k tops.

Do you mean 125 miles there and 125 miles back? That's a lot of miles but still half of what you're suggesting.

I make it 62 miles each way.

Lack of tax on the Greenline will make a tiny difference and not worth it considering fuel will be the biggest money consumer.

I would stick with what you have, since there will also be a cost involved in changing cars and this will likely be larger than the fuel saving. The greenline is not that fuel efficient, especially if stuck in traffic.

I used to average 72mpg in my Greenline II Fabia.

Over one year I did 20k miles, most of which on open A roads and motorways so it was giving it's best economy.

I could get 78mpg, but driving like that was soul destroying. I only did it to see what was possible and I averaged that over 3 full tanks.

Realistically you'll get around 70mpg.

If your Scout does 60mpg (which I doubt, as the trip figure is probably optimistic) you'll save about £450 per year in fuel.

Forget the cheaper road tax, the Fabia does not have variable servicing like the Octavia, so rather than 18k services you'll be fixed on 10k ones. Which will offset the road tax savings.

The trip on the Greenline used to show in the 80's most of the time, my figures above are on real world tank to tank calculations.

If you put your foot down a bit and drive it like a normal car and do motorway speed limits you'll get around 65-68mpg, but it will do 70mpg with a bit of consideration to econony and by limiting yourself to around 65mph.

Before you seriously consider it I'd do some real calculations on how much you fill up with each time and how far you get.

Your trip figure may be accurate, but it could be optimistic by up to 10%.

Meaning greater savings, as each 5% is another £165 saved meaning a possible £780 if it's 10% out.

My Greenline II Fabia was about 10% optimistic and my diesel Yeti is around 7% optimistic. Yet my wife's Yeti is pretty much bang on.

Trust me, the Scout isn't doing 60mpg.

Our Scout averages 39mpg (calculated manually) but this is all urban driving, however the OBC will happily lie to me and tell me I'm averaging 52mpg.

A long run at 60-70mph will see late 40's.

The official combined fuel consumption is 44.1mpg, with extra urban (pretty much impossible to acheive on most cars) at 52.3mpg.

60mpg may be possible coasting down a steep hill with the wind behind you and the engine turned off :giggle:

I love our Scout, and interestingly enough I also average 30,000 miles a year (130 mile round trip commute), so I gave the Scout to the wife and bought a diesel vRS (48mpg).

I miss the Scout and would be prepared to swallow the higher running costs over the vRS for its comfort and capabilities.

My boss just bought an Octavia Greenline, it looks so plain and boring. He averages 60+mpg but you and I will be spending approx, 3+ hours in the car each day! Make sure you are sat in something you want to be sat in!

Have you done any real mpg over a tank of fuel calculations?

My Yeti (170 4x4) averages 48mpg over the route the Fabia GL II averaged 72mpg.

Hey Wez, yeah my Scout is a 2008 (08) so its the trusty old 2.0 8V SOHC PD140 engine.

I'll upgrade to the CR one day if they ever return to the more realistic prices that I'd paid for mine - so that'll be unlikely then :giggle:

Seriously though, once the vRS dies I'll be looking for a CR Scout to take over the reins!

Well mine might be or sale soon. Only problem is that's is loaded including a full leather retrim, I say problem as all other scouts are basic spec, so value is hard to determine...

Although I guess I could run the wife's car, but that's already got high mile (70k, 5 years old) and struggles to achieve over 40 MPG. Nice car though, but better to serve her for the next few years (especially as we have had a couple large bills, circa £1000) than for me to run it for a year only to have to sale on at 100k before all its value has gone.
