10 year olds annual service

Featured Replies

Hi

All the best for the season and New Year to fellow Fabia fans.

Our beloved 1.9 Tdi Comfort is nearing her 10th birthday and due for her annual service/MOT in January.

Only done 52000 miles and we only use her for local trips and an odd blast on the M62.Max now 4000 miles pa.Use Yeti for longer non supermarket trips

Apart from a new belt around 4 years ago/40000 miles, a battery at 8 years old and tyres no major work done.

Last 5 sevices (not dealer) have been just MOT and oil change and around three of years ago I changed the air filter (I am very limited on DIY!!)

Notice brake fluid last changed 2005 so will get this done should have been done sooner.

Touch wood car still goes great with regular Millers additive when tank filled.Only little gripes are eccentric locking unlocking, self locking and sticky electric windows.

Any tips for other checks/work required or leave well alone?

Thanks in anticipation.

Cheers

She really ought to have another cambelt on time alone as it's 4 years from the last. I'd give the air filter a hoover out.

I had an audi a2 at work the other day, was a 1.4 diesel. The guy had owned it from 2 years old with around 30k miles on it, it was now on 160k miles and has never had the belt changed in his ownership! he's been strongly advised to change it now.

As above (belt, brake fluid and usual service) plus suggest squirt thin oil into door. High pressure or aerosol; will keep internals moving. Even if brakes are OK probably worth a visual inspection and clean as there's no point in changing fluid only to find a part needs changing next week.

With regard to the rear brakes, if they are drums, I would have the drums taken off and the cylinders checked for leaks. Both mine were leaking at about 8 years though the fluid had not got on to the shoes.

Slightly concerned you and whoever is servicing can't be bothered to check what service items are due, brake fluid is stupidly cheap, very easy to do and has a 2 year interval, OK 2 years *may* be slightly cautious if it's been tested and is OK but 6 is ridicolous and would make me question why the garage I was paying to service my car hadn't bothered to do a BFC on the last 3 occasions it was due, also what else have they overlooked.

If it were me I'd do oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter, brake fluid (2yr interval), coolant (5yr interval), timing belt (4yr/60k), water pump, pulleys, fuel filter, gearbox fluid, check the driveshaft seals, console bushes, drop links and lubricate the locks/hinges/clean earths etc. While you could save a few pounds by skipping the gearbox fluid and cabin filter, water pump and pulleys it'd be a false economy.

I'd also have a look at the previous service history to see what had been missed.

Ditto.........Avalons post above...^^^^^^^^^^

My cars a 2000 build which I got jan/feb 2001.....and only just clocked 51, 500........(i walk to work).....and you ought to see the ammount of servicing that I've done :D ..................all based on "age"....

Thanks for all the tips. MOT and substantial service done yesterday. Brake fluid, brake disks checked and cleaned 50% front 60% back, fuel filter, oil and oil filter, new air filter as old one filthy, given a good check going over lubricated door hinges etc. Checked records and only 2 and half years since timing belt changed (yippee). No MOT issues.

Just over £200 quid but had a quick blast on the motorway and touch wood good for a while yet is the pocket rocket.

Cheers

Peter
