Numpty Tyre Question

I'll be rotating my wheels at the weekend because I've noticed the front tread is quite a bit thinner that the rear. It got me to thinking that I'll probably have to replace the tyres at about 20,000 miles, which should be in about a year.

I had a quick look and the cost of four 205/50 R17 Z-rated tyres seems to be in the region of

I've been running 225/45 for the last 82000 miles. No problems yet, but time will tell ;)

Told my insurance co, as it is a change to the car, they weren't interested. Told them I did want it on record in case of a claim. No problem.

Any comment on why wider tyres would be cheaper? Are they more common, therefore cheaper to mass produce?

Indeed they are. Also, up until about 12 months ago, they were a Porsche size and very little else used them. Porsche drivers have large wallets....
