Am I right in thinking that they have brought out a revised 1.4TSI engine in the vrs? When did they change them?

Yes you are right :) - Shame really I really liked Diesel!

Yes. the oder engines were CAVE and had many many revisions of things like pistons, injectors, spark plugs, PCVs etc before it was replaced by the CTHE engine which incorporates all of the alleged fixes.

OK well the one i've brought is a 61 plate which was registered in October 2011 is that before the change came about?

iirc as mine is the cthe, it got introduced in October 2012

Believe the change was only very recently, the engine type code for your car can be found on the black data panel in the drivers door frame.

The CTHE came out this year so you will most probably have a CAVE in your 61 plate.

It is not all doom and gloom with these engines, some don't touch a drop of oil, some go through it like there is no tomorrow, and others are around about the VAG average (500 ml per 600 miles). All i will suggest is that you keep an eye on the oil level in your engine and top up as necessary, you will quickly learn if your's is a high consumer, around about average or doesn't touch a drop and thus know you'll know roughly how often you need to check it.

However, what i can guarantee you though is that it will put a smile on your face :rofl:

My 12 reg has a CAVE so you prob got the same. Too early for me to tell if I got a duff one or not... :think:

Mine (62 plate) has the CTHE engine code (look on driver's door and service book sticker). It had 11 miles on the clock when I took ownwership. I have driven it pretty carefully and it has now done 2 K miles (3200 km) - and consumed about 0.75 litres of oil - so it's within the ~ 0.5 L/1000 km in the owner's manual. The only other thing I have noticed is the difference in MPG between short runs when the engine is cold and longer runs - it is not great around town from cold but when up to temp I get ~ 35 mpg around town, which aint bad. Oh and the rear wiper engine stopped working but was replaced in a morning by Lookers. The car came with a litre of longlife castrol edge but having put that litre in I have now bought a litre of 'non longlife' castrol edge. My last car was a V6 mk iv golf and that didn't really burn any oil between services - The Fabia performance is certainly stronger, although it lacks the haldex, the supercharger really does give it the low down grunt that the V6 lacked. So it seems that the CTHE engine also has a thirst for oil; motto is: Check your oil regularly as I would never trust the oil level sensor.

if you get a replacement engine, how can you tell which type youve got or is there no real way to know?

Simply ask Skoda UK what engine you got.

Get them to have the dealership that did the work stamp the Service book with the date of the engine change,

the mileage on the vehicle at the time of engine change and all the details of the Date of the Engine Build.

(you need this for future servicing of the engine.)

It should not really matter what is fitted if it is a good engine and the most up to date ECU upgrades.

Check the engine details and date sticker on the engine.

Copy them down and see what they are.

Mine's a 62 plate (1 September) and is a CAVE engine. Used zero oil at all in 6,500 miles so actually less than Slow Stu's new engine. I'm not tempting fate but some seem to be ok and some seem to be lemons. I guess all of the revisions to the new version simply reduce the chances of lemons.

Mine was delivered in November 2012 but ordered in August. So, I suppose, it must be one of the first CTHE Fabias (it's an estate). I don't mind putting the oil in from a £ perspective as it is dwarfed by fuel costs but I would mind if it blew up. When I read up on the car it did seem somewhat mad that a 1.4 petrol could give such torque and bhp figures and also be relaible and longlasting. I summised that it must be a 'stressed' engine so I paid the extra for an extended warranty. Be interesting to see what the (very) similar engine in the Audi A1 behaves like and how these things run after 5 years.......

Those folks who are 'tuning' their engines to > 200 Bhp and 200 lbft must be seeing even greater failure rates?

I know of an engine running the TMC box at over 200bhp (its going on the rollers on the 23rd, I'll post a map up) and it doesn't use a drop of oil......

running a tmc and itg and doesnt use a drop i think the engines are hit and miss

one thing you have to bear in mind is that people use a forum when they have an issue so the situaltion always looks worst than it is
