Buying a VRS - Estate or Hatch

Featured Replies

I am wanting to move to an Octavia Estate, is there a huge amount of difference room wise between the estate and hatch?

What else should I be looking out for when shopping around, most of the examples I have seen in my budget are 70k + Miles. Would high mileage bother you on this engine?

Are there any common faults that will cost me, if so are there tell tale signs of these I would notice on a viewing?

Are there any other VAG vehicles with this engine worth considering?

Any input would be appreciated, well anything useful anyway.

Scott.

The 1.8t engine is generally strong as long as well serviced, it has some issues with coilpacks going as well as oil strainers being blocked. Over 100k is easy as long as well looked after. The hatch IMO is better looking and has the 17 inch wheels instead of the 16 inch wheels on the estate. Its less practical of course.

So buying one at 100k shouldn't be an issue as long as there is reasonable proof of it being well looked after?

Never noticed the size difference on the wheels. But obviously wheels are interchangeable so not the end of the world.

Another thing, I notice in your signature you've had a remap, noticeable difference? Worth the cost?

Thank you.

I would say so. Regular servicing is the key really. You may well struggle to find a low miler anyway. I would read the buyers guide at the top of the forum and have a good check over any potential cars. Any cars with a full set of good name tyres would be a decent starting point in my opinion. Any with cheapo ones could indicate costs have been cut elsewhere. Of course receipts and service history helps an awful lot.

Yes, the remap. Well worth doing, has been on for 5 years with no ill effects, car has just turned over 81k. The extra power is very noticable and recommended.

That's a very nice estate you have there.

I had the hatch and should have bought the estate as I always thought it looked better. The 16" wheel issue can be easily fixed and there's the load lugging advantage which I could have done with from time to time.

If I was to get another fast family car - which I will when children's car seats are no longer needed - it will be an estate. I am currently fixated with the Audi 3.0 diesel engine. The local police run this engine in the A4 Avant and they really shift as I saw this evening on the A64 near Scarborough.

Going back to the original question. Do you need an estate? If not then there's a lot of hatches for sale and if they have a decent remap then I'd consider that a bonus.

When looking at 100k mile + car you need to make sure the car has had its 2nd timing belt change. If it hasn't it could be a good bargaining point as you'll be looking around the £270-£300 mark to have this done with genuine parts.

I'd go for the estate as it looks 100x better than hatch. But that's just my taste :)

Good place to start with help and knowl

Good place to start for help and tips is the buyers guide on main Octy page:

http://www.briskoda....de-please-read/

very useful.

I like Hatchbacks but the Octy estate is a very nice shape as far as estates go.

Gee's has made me look at VRS estates in a whole new way, his is fantastic...

I have kids and I find the Hatch ample space for me.

I am very surprised the amount of space it has and with seats folded down gets all sorts in.

They are more common than estates so you don't have to travel so far and are a little cheaper than estates.

Regular oil changes is key on these cars and FSH to be confident you have a good example. The cars are not fetching much these days so a good time to buy one.

Mine is on 145,000 miles and going strong, lot more life in her.

Don't be put off but higher mileage cars and let's face it the MK has been around since 2001

a 70+ mileage one would be a very good start for price value.

A remap makes one hell of a difference, like night and day and should be what the car was like from std.

My signature say's it all how much i have fettle'd somewhat with mine.

Considering I first bought it and said to my wife "it's a boring Skoda, can't do much with it mod wise" Oh right..............she never bought it either..lol

Thank you everyone for your input, think I'm sold on an estate now. Just got to find the right one.

Bowders, I see in your signature that you've fitted an OEM Sat Nav, is it a fairly involved job? I only ask as this would be something I would want to do.

Seriously it took me 20 min as it is plug and play. All the wires are std in the car. As long as you get the unit with it's gps device most recent maps cd and code to unlock head unit the rest is easy. I have a install guide and manual somewhere.

Only thing I would state is they are dated units and do not do post code searches. But I like the fact that they are double din and complete the center dash well and also light up green to match the dash. (if you get a skoda one)

owning a hatch, i'd say unless you are bother by the looks get an estate

more practical, and quality tyres are much much cheaper since it runs 16" - you will be needing this!

the rest of the car is basically the same

I went for a hatch because there was more of them about, I prefer the looks and the boot is still HUGE!

Mine is on 97k and doing just fine! Common faults are breather hoses, MAF, coil packs and central locking. The breather hoses and MAF can cause hesitation and it is often more noticeable when cold. I wouldn't be too put off by mileage as long as it has been well looked after. As with all cars around this age/mileage suspension bushes, wheel bearings and clutches might be close to needing replacement.

Lots of other cars in the VAG range use the 1.8T engine, whether they are worth considering depends what you want out of the car and what your budget is.

I wouldn't bother fitting an OEM sat nav because sat navs go out of date quickly. Also moving it between cars is not as straightforward as a windscreen mounted sat nav.

I'm not that far from you so if you want to have a nose around mine send me a PM. :)
