Chrome Grill Respray

Featured Replies

Hi,

Sorry if this is in the wrong section but i'm looking at respraying the chrome grill surround in diamond silver to match the car. I've already bought the spray and i've got a spare grill surround in case it goes horribly wrong but can anyone advise on the best way to do the respray??

Will it be to sand, primer and spray?? If so, what grade wet/dry should i use??

Cheers.

Loads of threads on here about this but from what im doing at the moment:

key the chrome grill well

2 coats of primer with a light going over with wet & dry inbetween

this is where i am at the moment but next steps are

3 coats of black magic spray with a quick rub inbetween

2 layers of laquer leaving enough time to let the first go tacky before applying the second (might do a third as well)

I did use the search but the majority i came up with were talking about wrapping the grill, which isn't something i want to consider doing yet.

I also found a thread that mentioned rubbing down the grill but i don't want to mark it too much and make it look crap, that's why i asked about which grade wet/dry i needed.

I'll be attempting it hopefully in 2 weeks time and if i mess it up, it could be another 2 or 3 weeks before i get another go, so want to make sure i do everything right.

Im sure there was a mention somewhere of bathing the grill in bleach for an extended period of time to strip it, but I have no idea how that works out not having done it. Will be looking into getting a spare grill to colour code myself hopefully in the new year, so please keep us posted how it works out if you can :).

Sorry Iann but after listening to some advice from a fellow member on here, i've decided to go down the plasti dip route but i've bought a can of silver metalizer to go over the top of the black, so it will hopefully not look too black but won't be completely silver either, i don't think.

I used etch primer so it gave more of a bite into the chrome coating... After scotchpad-ding the surround...

Pics required either way :p.

I know it's probably a daft question but do you need to primer before plasti-diping???

No I just gave it a quick wipe down with a wet sponge and dried it before I started plastidipping it.

Would the same apply for bodywork as well??

I guess so, although after joining Detailing World I'm never using a sponge on bodywork again! Seriously though, on the spray bottle I've got it says that the surface must be clean and dry before use, so as long as that's the case then you're good to go. I've been thinking of doing my B-pillars (that's right I think, the bit between the front and back doors?) but not sure if I've got enough left in the spray can!

I'm only planning on spraying my grill and spoiler at the moment, so hopefully there will be enough in a 330ml can. Do you just put 1 coat of plasti-dip on??

I put 3 coats on my grill. Used just over half a can I think.

Gotta be better than paint John, i wrapped mine but did an average job so sprayed but after a few hundred miles its chipped pretty bad. I sanded primed and quality paint. Going to wrap again! I reckon plastidip will be a good option.

Cheers guys.

I think i need to get some more ordered, especially if i want to spray my spoiler as well.

You will need about three coats for the grill with 20 mins drying time in between. No need for primer just make sure that grill is clean and dry. Also you need a warm environment to spray in. A freezing cold garage in darkest winter = crap result !!!

Im going to attempt wrapping or plastidip'ing mine. Attempted to say it as above and it looks ok but even giving it a light going over with fine wet & dry between coats is taking paint and primerely off so it'll chip like hell on the car.

For people wrapping it, what did you use? There's a wrapping place near my work so may go down and see if they have any offcuts or can do it for me cheap...

Don't bother with the bleach stripping method, it's not cost effective based on the volume required and time involved. Although it does work eventually.

Electrolysis doesn't work well enough.

The chemical stripping method I've found will have it done in five minutes, for less than eight quid, but it' pretty out there.

Honestly the most durable cost effective finish other than proper stripping, priming and painting, is wrapping with vinyl.

In my experience, no etch priming of a copper/chrome electrolysis coated plastic will be durable long term.
