Bit of Advice Please

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm looking at buying an Octavia vRS TDI DSG however I'm just asking is there anything I need to look out for when driving. Are there any common faults on them? And also it comes with say nav, is that any good? I'm gonna try the car out for a day so I'm going to try the sat nav system out but wanna know from people who have it.

Wheel geometry seems to be a common driving issue on Octavias regardless of type. Check for a steering wheel that's centered and for steering that feels well planted on the straight ahead and doesn't need constant 'twitching' to keep it on track.

Non-driving issues are the usual maintenance stuff; in particular check for cambelt & waterpump changes, and oil change on the DSG box. If they are due, knock some cash off the price.

Check back wheels for wear on the inner edges. You'll need to get down on your hands and knees to look properly.

If it's a pre FL (facelift) check the sills above the dimpled stone chip paint for bubbles and rust. the paint wasn't high enough, corrected on the FL.

If it's a special edition check the alloys are round, they've a reputation for being soft.

Check the ESP light will come on when you switch it off, there is a known issue with the ABS (Teeves Mk60) and reports of people removing the bulb to hide it. Not such a big issue as it was once now there is a repair kit.

Other than that it's the same stuff as any other car. They're pretty reliable on the whole.

Ok cheers people. It's a facelift one I'm looking at more like hawk eye style than the rectangular lights. I'm looking at either new or ex demo car at mo unless I see another one that's right. How can you turn the ESP system off? Is there a switch located on the centre console area?

Yes they're is a switch low down in the centre console , I think. I only ever turn it off in the snow so my memory is a bit hazy.

The "skids off" button on the dash switches off the traction control (allows wheels to spin) but does not turn off the ESP iirc.

If you're looking at a FL car then the nav will either be Amundsen or Columbus. Columbus is the better of the two but both are pretty good.

It's just to prove the bulb is there.

This one comes with the Columbas sat nav system. What's the difference between the two systems?

Thanks for all the tips I'm still trawling through all the posts some very nice Octavias here

New or nearly new you shouldn't have any particular problems. Any you do would be under warranty anyway. Other that that the usual look for recepits rather than a stamp in a book.

Aftervanother test drive and bit of haggling, I've the car pick it up Friday cannot wait

Just a few questions:

-How do I tell if I have a Maxi Dot trip computer? I think I do but not sure.

-Is it hard to fit a USB lead into the car or MDI lead. It comes with the Columbas Sat Nav system so don't wanna loose that.

-Is the CD player that comes with the car a single CD player or is it a multi disc player?
