My mk2 Octy has a faulty Dash- anybody had one repaired?

Featured Replies

My Octy has developed the faulty dash issue that appears to have blighted the mk1 and a few mk2's

I currently have no rev counter and the trip and fuel computer reset every time I turn the car off.

Luckily the speedo and mileage still work fine so can still run the car for the short term, I have had he car into an Indy and main dealer and both are advising replacing the dash at cost of around £500-£600.

I have been looking online and have found a few company's that repair the dash, has anybody had any experience of the below company's or can recommend a company that repairs Skoda dash's?

A colleague at work just have to have his "dashboard insert" replaced by a London based dealer at a cost of £500.

He had problems similar to those you describe intermittently, finally leading to the car starting, then dying after a couple of seconds. He drives a fairly early mkII diesel. Apparently the dealer struggled to marry it to the car as the instructions were all in German. All working again now, wallet somewhat lighter!

Why not get a new dash from Skodateile (could even get a Maxidot one if you don't already have it) and get a dealer to swap the pods over.

Would probably work out cheaper and you'd have a new dash rather than a repaired one.

Just a thought.

@bert13 Yeah thats what I have been Quoted for a brand new dash from the main dealers ( indy said £500-£600 as they were not quite sure of work involved) which ever way I go My wallet is going to be lighter

@KBPhoto thanks for the heads up, I have had a look and can see I can get a standard dash for 245 Euro ( about £200) or a Maxidot fort 262 Euro ( about £213) so certainly a saving  have you any Idea how much shipping will be from CZ as I can't seem to find a page that shows parts and shipping cost ( plus I dont speak Czech lol) also is it worth me upgrading to Maxidot on my Ambiente ? what will I gain over the standard dash?

Cheers

Dave

For a difference of around £13, I'd definitely go for the Maxidot - so much nicer looking, added functionality and control of car (without resorting to VCDS). I have an Ambiente with delusions that it's going to be a Vrs when it 'grows up' (not sure if SWMBO was referring to me or the car though!)

Postage will be around €20-30 at most (we paid €50 on a 6.9kg delivery from Ales at Skodateile late last year and yours will weigh much less than that), but I can't find an email of the break down on weights / costs that Ales sent me).

Use Google Translate (but Ales speaks pretty good English in emails) and email [email protected] and register with Post Office International Payments and you can make a transfer to his bank (over £250) for free.

I think the dealer will charge around £200-250 to make the swap (if you can find one that will). Read a thread from Mike Holroyd regrading his experiences of getting a Maxidot dash panel swapped in his Octavia.

I had a dash crash in my old mk1. I sent it to a place in Gt Yarmouth. Took a week, so VOR. but came back 100% functional. Cost about £140 - 150. I did the removal/refitting myself, easy job. My unit repaired so no coding issues.

The nice people on utube have a video how to repair your own, if you feel brave.

Not sure if its the same with a 1Z with or with out maxidot. Does a grown up know if the dash is coded to the vehicle on the mk2?

Thanks for the response KBPhoto, I will check with the main dealer for fitting/swapping cost but at £200/£213 fro the Dash plus shipping plus £200/£250 to swap out im in the ball park of what the dealer was charging for a new dash ( I'm sure he quoted £500 fitted but I'll check that when I call about swap) I have a look at Mike's thread cheers.

The company's I mentioned in my first post are quoting between £80 and £180 with between 12- 36 month warrenty so this might be a more frugal option, I'm hoping someone has had a good experience with them as this would save me a few of my hard earned ;)

Hi Nickguzzi

yeah the mk2 dash is coded to the car so as KBPhoto has said a new one will need Main dealer intervention to swap :wall:

do you have the details of the company you used? I might give them a shout to see if they can do mk2.

Sorry. I misread your post and thought that you were being quoted around £500+ for a repair to the dash! My mistake.

I believe that Shark can do dash swaps of new and used pods, and that Eddie_NL (on this forum) can now do them (new and possibly used ones).

Cheers KBPhoto I'll keep Shark and Eddie_NL in mind and might drop them a PM to see what the cost of a swap might be, if I'm going down the new route I think I'll take your advice and get a Maxidot from Skodateile for the sake of a few quid more especially if Shark or Eddie_NL are cheaper to do the swap out.

For now I'm going to dig deeper into the repair route, If anyone else has had any experience of the repair route or can rcomend a company please let me know.

what year is your car?

Hi Eddie

its a 2005 55 reg

http://www.clusterrepairsuk.co.uk/contact/

Someone else has already posted this company.

I certainly didn't have any problems with them or their work. If you can remove and refit dash (easy, unless you are a bonehead) you don't need to do any recoding. So its just the cost of the repair. No idea how much some one would charge to do the job. Maybe an hours work total, if you two teabreaks. And subsequent leaks.

Like I said before, you have VOR while it is being done.

Excellent Thanks nickguzzi thats one of the companys I was looking at on the tinterweb, good to know that they did a good job for you, not to fussed about VOR as we have the SWMBO car and I have my Bike.

I could prob remove and replace the Dash myself, if not I have a mate who can help.

  • 1 year later...

I am responding to this thread after spending a few hours helping my friend to fix his faulty dash in his 2005 Octavia Mk II 2.0TDi.

The symptoms were:

  1. No rev counter or speedo.
  2. Coolant fans running continuously.
  3. Side lights and headlights not working.
  4. The fault was intermittent.
  5. Air con not working.

The AA attended the vehicle and diagnosed the dash as the problem. My friend and I read the various articles on the web about the common problems with the Mk I dash which were caused by bad solder joints.

Unfortunately when he brought the car around to fix it was working at the time so as yet we cannot be conclusive about the success of our fix.

This is what we did:

  1. Remove the headlight switch (in the 'off' position, push the selector in, and turn it clockwise, it will go around halfway between off and sidelights (or auto) then pull towards you.)
  2. Pull off the two small pieces of trim below the dash either side of the steering trim.
  3. Remove the two T20 screws holding the bottom of the dash.
  4. Release the top two clips holding the top of the dash in place. Use a torch and a small flat bladed screwdriver.
  5. Pull the dash forward and remove the electrical plug by folding up the release lever all the way (90 degrees).
  6. Remove the four T10 screws visible from the back of the dash.
  7. Carefully release the plastic clips around the outer edge until the case front can be removed.
  8. Be very careful not to: scratch the dials, move the needles or damage the clear plastic on the front.
  9. Using a wide flat bladed screwdriver carefully lever the circuit board and dial assembly up from the power supply circuit board mounted in the back part of the case. It is only held in by two 2 row conntectors.
  10. Remove the two T10 screws holding the power supply circuit board in place and release the two clips on the top edge.
  11. Looking on the back of the power supply circuit board you can see there are two 5 lead regulators similar to the ones that gave grief on the Mk I dash. Carefully resolder the 5 leads on each regulator as well as the main tab.
  12. We also resoldered the joints on the MELF style resistors since these were also identified as causing problems on the Mk I dash.

The following photos are of a Mk I dash but show what the voltage regulators and MELF resistors look like.

In addition to the above we also disassembled the top dial circuit board assembly and resoldered all the MELF resistors. However I would not recommend that you do this unless resoldering the power supply circuit has not fixed your problem. We had lots of trouble getting the needles accurately realigned and in trying to set the coolant temp needle we managed to disengage the internal gears in the mechanism. It took us an additional hour to take that apart, re-seat the worm drive and put it all back together!
