cheap run around... seat ibiza 99?

Featured Replies

Hey guys i'm looking to buy my gf's folks a cheap car to run around in.

their retired so cant afford much in the way of running it. i was looking into polo's and the like.

are the Seat's any good from that era? i know they where owned by VW so its prob just a polo but i'm double checking :) thanks.

should be OK. Colleague drives one of the last of that era, on a 51 plate. Can tell from the fact its a 4 stud, its from that time. Its been solid for him anyway and he's ran it for several years.

Won't beat my cheap runaround though - £150. ;) 70mpg

Thanks mate.

We're a family that doesnt touch french cars haha :D

That generation Ibiza is like the polo underneath, even the dashes look the same. Same faults too.

I drove a 98 Ibiza for nearly 3 years, 2004 -2006, erm, mine wasn't that reliable but I did quite a few miles - spent over a year doing around 100 mile daily commute.

That was the mk 2 Ibiza which is equivalent Polo mk3, the 6N (to avoid doubt)

I am too usually, but the above was too good to turn down as a runaround whilst the Skoda is off the road for a month or so.

Like a 6n, but with Golf 2 rear end I think (and some Golf engines too).

Friend has an ABF Cordoba, quite a nippy thing.

Ta peeps as long as there is nothing majour to go wrong i'm sure we'll notice something if its wrong.

A P reg 1.4SE as my first "proper car" when i was 18/19 .

Was a cat D body work only repair and had no mechanical issues at all in the 2-3 years i drove it.

Only sold it to fund the purchase of something a bit safer (i.e with airbags!) following my other half passing her test.

I then purchased oneo f the last mk2 Ibiza 2.0l GTI 8v on a '99 V-plate last year as a "cheap" second car and it was excellent.

115bhp and ran faultlessly for the year it was in my care and excelled on a trackday at Oulton Park.

Only lifted the bonnet to service it, change a worn breather pipe and an old gasket.

That said my brother had a 97 R plate 2.0l 16v and it gave him no end of problems, mainly with the immobiliser/key/ignition barrel but he loved it when it was running.

The mk3 seen here in Cupra form

was classed as a different model but was actually an extreme face lift as it was mehanically the same underneath althoguh i think standard kit was improved (air con/climate etc)
