Need some RAM for an old Desktop PC

Featured Replies

Wondering if anyone has any spare RAM about lying around suitable for an old desktop, a 7 year old Dell Dimension 8400. Currently running a single DDR2 PC-5300 1gb stick. It has 4 slots and can take upto 4gb. (Still running XP though)

Crucial want nearly 30 quid for a pair of 1gb DIMMs but the current single stick only cost me 6 quid (cheers Matt) a couple of years ago. Anyone got some before i take a chance with ebay? Would prefer a matched pair.

Trying to get another year out of it and its struggling with itunes now so more RAM can't harm.

None of my spares are that new.

Got some EDO SIMMS if anyone is interested

Flea bay might be your best bet but they're not always that cheap for older kit.

I have a couple of 512mb PC2 4200u

or 1off

256 ddr PC2 2100

probably a bit naff for your usage?

I think the 2x512 would work but I'd prefer a 2x1gb if I can get one.

I may I have some 1GB sticks but they could also be 512.

Will check over the weekend.

I'll have a look in my spares.......but might be pc3200........

Sadly I actually gave away 4gb of DDR2 RAM a few months ago. I have 2 1gb modules left but they are actually fitted in a machine.

DDR2 being a depreciated specification has very little demand. Not a huge amount is manufactured, smaller quantities than DDR3 sadly pushes the price up relative to DDR3 hence crucials increased cost.

Hitting up ebay might actually be the best option.

With the age of the computer, it actually wouldn't surprise me if you could pick up a whole computer of similar vintage from Gumtree or similar, swap RAM around to beef yours up, and then sell the computer on again with your 1GB for not far off the same amount. Wouldn't be new parts so it's a bit of a gamble, but worth looking into since you could probably get a "free" upgrade with half an hour or so's work.

Checked my old spares.........got matched sets of 512mb PC3200...........two matched sets I think...so no use then!

I think the original spec was only PC2-4200 but 5300 seems to be the lowest spec currently available.

Oh well, doesn't look like anyone can help. Decisions, decisions.

I've just located a pair of matched Corsair CM2X1024 5400C4 sticks with decent 4-4-4-12 timings.

Of interest?

Not sure exactly what difference it makes. DDR2?

I would be interested but it depends what you want for them. Pentium 4 struggling with itunes nowadays. Nto sure how difference it'll make.

I have a couple of 1gb sticks gathering dust..not matched unfortunately.. An Elixir PC2 6400 and a Samsung PC2 4200 Not sure how or if they will run together..think they just default to running at the slowest speed.

If you havn't been sorted out yet I could post them and you could try em out...not too worried about payment..maybe just the price of a pint or two if they work !! Just send me a message if you are interested.

If anyone I know needs RAM for an older 'puter, I nip down the local tip and get some out the back of the chucked out machines. Not had a duff stick yet

Not a bad idea, i think i dumped some the other week at my local tip that may have suited the OP (bugger).

local tips are a goldmine for tech some people call 'old'. I got a brand new, boxed BT Vision black box from one last year to replace my older silver one, only paid a fiver for it ;)

Being that its a dell, memory speed wont matter as it uses ****e timings anyway and i doubt its even running at 5300 - on the plus side the P4's are quite good at heating rooms ;)

Why do you think I'm doing it now, not in the summer?

I think I've given up on this. I was waiting for a decent deal on a 250gb-ish ssd but not much about at the moment (avoiding OCZ seems to be the advice). Anyway it makes more sense to put the ssd in my laptop and actually plug it into my monitor and keyboard for what i want to do than bother much more with the desktop.

an ssd will make a massive difference where ever you put it, ill try have a look about to see if i have any ram thats suitable

ive found some ocz pc2 8500 sli sticks but looking around there still worth a bob or two so might be un economical for you as aria still ask about £35 for the pair :( so as these are still wrapped (unused actually) they got to be worth half that

ive got 2 256 pc2 4200 sticks too if you want to just add to what you have and im sure if i look hard enough i have others but its just finding the buggers, you could have those 256 for the price of a jiffy bag and postage as there no use to me

i really do need to have a sort out

Have tracked down a new, unopened 1GB DDR2 PC2-4200 module so far in my 'tech store'.

Any use? Of more use if I find another, matched module to go with it?

EDIT: make that 3 of those! I really should look through this stuff more often ;)

Oh, and 4No 256MB PC2-4200 :)

tbh i wouldnt bother about them being matched, im sure they will all work just fine for what he requires

Thanks for the offer Mad Monk but I'm really looking for something a bit bigger than the single 1gb stick I have at the moment. As Mr Wardy is very local to me I have made him an offer instead.

just glad you got sorted matey :)
