Sudden misting up

Featured Replies

Had a problem this morning - in an Octavia vRS Blackline - no snow up here, just rain, so when I set off, the windows were clear, I had climate control on at temp set at 23c. After about 8 miles, turned temp down to 21c, and a couple of minutes later, all the windows suddenly steamed up, turned temp down to 'low' but nothing, had to pull over and use a cloth to clear screen. Aircon had obviously packed up as cool but not cold air was coming out of vents, had to continue to drive with windows open a bit to keep screen clear.

Its booked into dealers on Wed for them to check it, but anyone had this happen?

Was it below 4 degrees outside? If so Aircon turns off (although I think the light on the button will still be on).

Were you on auto recirculation? As that will close off fresh air if pollutants are detected or you go into reverse, when this happens your windows start to mist up on a damp day.

So without aircon active, turning the temp down will encourage the warm moist air to cool and condense.

I had this happen twice on a trip across the border into Spain. Early start and it misted up suddenly after 15km. I had to stop. Tempertaure control on Auto and set to 19. I suppose the outside temp might have dropped below 4. On the return after several hours of driving the same thing happened 5km from home - bizarre with the car temp around 20. The external temp was 9 degrees for the 2nd occasion. Turning on the de-mist buttons cleared it on both occasions.I had supposed that aircon is not selected unless cooling is required or de-mist is on??

It begs the question of why the air-con turns itself off below 4c - mine misted up suddenly as I was driving along with my parents in it today. It was so bad I had to pull over as I couldn't see out of the windows. If the aircon stayed on then the misting up would probably not happen and it would certainly clear the windows more quickly!

It was about 1.5c if I recall, but why should the air-con turn off at low temps? One of the pros of air-con is demisting the car in the winter. I had my last vRS for 3 years and this never happened. I can understand it misting up when you first get in and introduce a temp variation to the cabin, but once you've cleared the windows they should stay clear for the journey. Occasionally you notice the side windows misting a bit and a quick blast of the fans gets rid of that, but I've never had it totally mist up all of a sudden like that.

Interesting Chappers that you had the same problem today and with a Blackline too. Have they been fitted with a dodgy batch of aircon units?

I'll let you know how it gets on with the dealer on Wed.

The aircon turns off at low temps as the condensation freezes on the condenser potentially causing damage to it.

Its the water that leaves a puddle under the car when its sat idling in the summer that freezes.

Took car into the dealers, evidently the passenger side heater motor needs replacing as this is broken and was causing the climate control to miscommunicate with itself... Anyway I've had not problems since but its going in next week to get a new motor fitted.

Result!

I didn't know there were different motors for each side of the car!

No, neither did I.

Its to do with the duel climste it has too motors. I personaly think its a pointless design. Because you only benifit from warm legs on one side and cod if pasenger wants t. Soon as it reaches head hight te two dif temps have combined.
