Alternator

Featured Replies

The Battery light came on this evening and stayed on. I have been told this means my Alternator has packed up, is this going to be a nightmare/expensive to sort out ????

Its going in, in the morning. I want to be emotionally prepared !!!!

The alternator itself will be about a £100-£200 depending on output and where they get it, old alternators also get recycled/reconditioned so you should get some cash back for it.

If your budget it tight u can pick up reconditioned alternators for as little at £20 but be warned these usually dont come with a pully so your need to pick one of those ip aswell.

Cheers mate.

Not necessarily, could just be that your battery is knackared. Depends whether whoever told you performed a diagnostic inspection.

Jonno, the battery has not been acting up at all, it starts strongly in very cold conditions although it is the original battery in the car(533,000kms)

Car back now. Another swift turnaround by my mate/mechanic, it needed as suspected a new Alternator.

I got a rebuilt unit for €170 + fitting (few pints)

Quite a few Alternator failures are due to worn voltage regulator brushes which can be replaced with new regulator for about £25. Well worth an inspection of the brush lengths to see if brushes are worn.

No, it was disintegrating. It was completely sh***ed, pully, bearings the lot.

I guess half a million kilometres will do that to a component!!
