Changing a fuel filter on a PD170 - is it difficult?

Featured Replies

The fuel filter is due a change and I want to see if it effects cold start.

My garage is busy and I have the filter at home - is it difficult to fit? If not, would be most grateful for an idiots guide!

Thanks, it does help a bit!

But a different engine, also can anyone tell me if it's a bonnet up job or from underneath?

I have a mate coming round later who is handy (read very handy), so he should be able to assist but did advise a PITA if underneath!

Done from the engine bay. Do not leaver off the filter cover housing with a screwdriver, it will never sit right again causing diesel fuel to leak everywhere. The housing is on the front drivers side of the engine bay IIRC with a load of pipes going in to the lid.

That's really helpful - thanks a lot!

Would be grateful for anyone who knows the process stage by stage, I believe you need to remove the fuel pump fuse first to stop the fuel peeing out at high speed?

Also just checking it's one rubber ring and not two as the Bosch one I ordered came with just one?

Replacing the fuel filter and fuel filter housing didn't improve my cold starting issue.

Let us know if you notice an improvement.

Your details say your Octavia vRS is a MkI, this is the MkII forum, the fuel filter may be different on the MkI?

It's a Mk2 PD170?

Fuel pump fuse out, run car until it stalls. Remove nuts and take out old filter. Replace with new filter and fill with diesel (makes starting easier). Replace nuts - return fuse and continue to turn car over to starts.

Your details on the left of your posts say MkI.

Had fuel filter and brake fluid change today (all for a shockingly low price of £57 inc  )

Car seems to run a lot smoother and mpg seem to be up even when driving it a bit harder on the way home tonight. Time will tell.

Be very careful to make sure that all the sealing surfaces are clean and smooth, it's not unknown for these to leak and in a worse case contaminate the auxiliary belt causing bits of it to get caught in the timing belt and ruining the engine.
