I drive a 4x4 - I'm invincible!

ESP is just ASR with knobs on, I don't know if pressing the ESP button completely turns the system off or not.

I think it just turns off ASR not ESP.

Was driving the wife's Rav 4 yesterday and had a few interesting moments approaching junctions and bends as it slid on the compacted snow/slush. Went out a bit later in the vRS (with winter thres) and had no issues at all other than when I deliberately pushed it to see where the limits were!

I took the other halfs Rav 4 out after work last night to walk the dog. Tried it on a few heavily snowed back streets and on a few hills. Was amazed how much traction it had. It gained speed at a decent rate when accelerating. You had to give it some serious throttle to get the wheels to spin and even then it still made amazing progress. Tried a few brake tests and it held on surprisingly well before ABS kicked in. On the same roads my VRS on summers barely makes progress at all.

Obvioulsy the 4wd is helping but i think its mainly the tyres on the rav. It has the original "duellers" on it. From looking at the tread design they must be similar to all season tyres as they have small "sips" on them like winter tyres have. Think their called sips anyway, the wee grooves cut into each tread block. Was very impressed with her car. We actually took it up the alps years ago on some seriously bad roads and it amazed me there how capable it was in the snow.

Anyone know what these "duellers" are?? Standard fit 2006 Rav 4.

Are they Bridgestone Duellers? I often have a few sitting about in 205/70R 15, & give them away to anyone that wants them, the first thing we take off of a Jimny.

My terrible in ice or slush BFG KM2's are good today in the nice thick snow,

but normally are as hopeless as Bridgestone Duellers.

From memory they are bridgestone duellers H/T or something. Seemed pretty grippy in the compacted snow in our street plus they got us up some horrendous roads in the alps. I cant fault then to be honest. They came fitted as standard so we never picked them specifically.

I confess, it's nice to be able to drive to the top of the car park, nearest to the day lodge/train, and, without any danger of getting stuck, venture into places where the 2WD mortals fear to tread... :giggle:

Of course, it helps to have a Nokian WR G2 on each corner to complement the 4WD...

Youd be as well driving it up the flippin slopes. The queues at the funicular are a total pain in the bum. The irony about skiing or boarding in Scotland is that when the snow finally comes the raods are closed then when they open the slope is shut due to wind then when that dies down the snow has all been blown away. We convince ourselves on a good day that we dont need European ski holidays, but we do. The two cant be compared.

Can't disagree, which is why we're off to Italy in March. As for Scotland, some days you can still get lucky...

(Not taken this season I hasten to add - unlike the shot in the car park, which was last month. And guess what happened that day? No uplift = too fekin' windy!)

My Grandfather was one of the orginal investors in Glencoe Ski Lodge (what's now Glencoe mountain), don't think his shares ever earnt a penny

There are days when the roads are open and you wish they were not, but you would not swap it for being anyplace else.

(well maybe just for someplace just up the road with hardly anyone there.)

eg

Son has just moved to Scotland Dundee, he's in the army's snowboard team he can't wait to get there now

True, I've often seen the yummy mummies in their Chelsea tractors getting stuck whilst doing the school run. Seeing me scoot by in a Polo (albeit fitted with Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons) I'm sure just piles on the misery for them.

One unexpected consequence of the Octy 4x4 stems from the fact that because it isn't SUV shaped, or has tupperware stuck over the wheel arches and on the front/rear ends, unless you clock the inconspicuous 4x4 badge on the rear you'd never think it was a 4WD. As a result, I've had people follow me up a snowy road only to get themselves well and truly stuck!

Oh ah ken?

ken = know

That's worse than welsh och aye thee nhu
