fitted new alternator on 1.9d pickup ( not as easy as i hoped)

Featured Replies

had a fun night tonight , doing my first alternator on my truck ,ive not done many alternators before ,but this one was the hardest yet!!!

i took radaitor out for extra space , fact i am not sure if it would be possible to do with rad in place?

only two bolts hold alternator on but its getting to the buggers !! a long handle 13mm spanner and i could only manage wee wee turns !! half an hour to unscrew 2 bolts ,(great fun out in the cold ,not!!)

once i took tensioner pulley off and the belt , the alternator come off a treat ,

replacing it was far easier and took half the time as i knew what i was doing by this time (kind off)

is there an easier way of doing this job?

how much would a garage charge for doing the same thing? i was thinking £50-£80 ?

i took me about 2-3hrs outside in the dark with a 60 watt bulb as an aid,

now that ive done it , i aint in a hurry to do another one , but i reckon i would manage it in half the time ,

it was just a pain in the arse of a job but saved me a few pounds,

Haha... I told you it was a pain in the hoop to do.....

Pics or it didn't happen..

The power steering hoses are about £150 each from skoda....

edit: mine was the same.... I was under mine every weekend for 6 months before it was any good.... Dammit I miss my pickup, wish I still had it.

hi tom

can i not just cut the hose , i think its leaking at the end were it fits the pump? someone has put 2 jubile clips on to try slow the leak down,,

i thought if i cut an inch of that would cure it??

the rubber hose is only about 12" long then it goes into a solid pipe up to power steering resivor?

regards steven

Yes that the low pressure one then, the one that goes from the reservoir along the bottom of the rad to to the pipe on the pump... it's normally like that with 2 jubilee clips, if you do replace that hose with new make sure you buy the right type of hose because fuel or coolant hoses will get eaten by the steering fluid, it's nt cheap, about 40£ per meter that stuff.
