Just took a test drive of a Leon Cupra R and the Leon FR TDI

Featured Replies

Both of these cars are awesome in their own right. I went out in the FR first. The performance was excellent and the handling is significantly better than my vRS. The gearbox and clutch vibration I experienced in my vRS was not evident in this thing and the engine sounds more like a petrol motor.

As for the Cupra R... What a machine! Immense handling (better than the Type R I drove last week, and the value for money is great. Now I know what you petrol vRS drivers are talking about! Unfortunately I ran the thing out of fuel with my overly keen and heavy right foot. This made me realise that the frugal diesel is the best buy for sure.

I would have bought the Cupra on the spot but I actually prefer the look of the diesel and the remapping potential of the 150 PS PD TDI is slightly better than the vRS, so I'm told. I managed to haggle nearly

When's it being delivered??

Probably next weekend...

In stock then - handy.

Look forward to the review. Next stop Jabba eh!!

You considering one? Big discounts to be had if you do.

205 PS with a Miltech me thinks...

Nah - just got the VRS's.

Can the clutch take 205? Is it a different clutch to the PD130??

Well its the same clutch as the Cupra R, and it's got 340NM and 225PS, but a remapped Leon would have about 420NM, so I'm not sure.

I know that revo have limited the power their remap delivers due to the clutch + heavier car.

also be aware that the Leon FR tdi also only has 288mm brakes, which are way too weedy for the car :thumbdwn:

I wouldn't remap the car until I had uprated the essentials anyway i.e. brakes, fluid etc. I'd probably just source the Brembos from the Cupra R. Although I think that the EBC brakes that Walkie used were maybe better however.

To be honest though, the brakes felt a million times better than those on my vRS.

The Leon FR is 1333Kg, so its only 18Kg heavier than the vRS. There's also better weight distribution so there won't be as much pressure on the front discs.

iv'e got the leon fr tdi. its a lot smoother than the vrs was but the initial kick from the turbo isn't as much as the pd 130. iv'e got the ibiza fr as well. the leon is due to go to jabba first week in july so i'll let you know how it does. i find the brakes fine in the standard car but may have to upgrade them with the remap.Tom. :D

Cant see how the brakes can be better than the Fabia, when they are the same... and the Fabia IS lighter than the Leon, even if its not a particularly large difference! The only thing that may help it is if it is more firmly sprung, so that it does not pitch / dive as much.

Fluid perhaps? Honestly, there was a big difference!

And if they are the same, I'm thinking there was something wrong with my Furby's brakes!

Perhaps they have a better caliper design which actually gives some decent feedback? Not sure as I havent driven either of the two Leons mentioned nor looked at their calipers myself.

The brakes are different.

the leon uses the same calipers as the 312mm conversion.. reinforcing the fact the ones on the fabia are a naff design :)

Ah well, furry muff :D

Hi dudes!

Sorry for the long absence. I've now got my Black Magic FR TDI and have just had it remapped by STAR Performance. :D

Let's just say I'm blown away by the difference a simple software change can make! The in-gear acceleration is awesome. The car seems to be running cleaner also. A lot less soot on initial acceleration, which is another unexpected benefit.

The Guys at STAR performance know their stuff! Don't know if anyone hear have used them before, but I'd definitely recommend them to people considering REVO or Jabba remaps in the near future. Jim, the owner, did a great job on the map for mine. A nice linear torque plot, and even smoother power distribution across the rev range. They have a digital 4WD-rolling road and offer switchable DPT programs.

I'm now putting out CTR power with twice the torque! :)

Hi dudes!

You'll still struggle to totally keep up with a well driven one though mate... Trust me!

Nice choice of motor though fella. Was it just down to the fuel consumption issue, that you decided against the Cupra R then I take it?

Is it the Revo re-map you've gone for? If so, good init!!! :):):)

As for the handling comment. I'm very suprised you thought the Leon handled better than the CTR. As I had a CTR fo three years (and a 100,000 miles) and have had my 225 LCR for nearly 4 months and can honestly say without any hesitation, that the CTR will leave the Leon through the twisties!!! As good as the LCR is, it's just to heavy a car to throw about compared with the CTR. But does make up for it in other areas, especially when Revo'd...

Happy motoring in the new wheels anyway mate...

Don't think I've ever said a Leon is better than a CTR. I've driven a CTR and it is one awesome car. The handling is second to none, in my opinion. My Leon is definitely more sluggish and tends to drift more in the corners.

I do prefer the instant surge you get from 197bhp coupled with 390Nm of torque. Overtaking and motorway journeys are effortless. It

Unless it's re-mapped also... ;)

This is what I was referring to mate....

Most modern VAG cars are not going to outhandle a Civic Type R though are they? AFAIK, they dont have any products that are as focused as a CTR, so its not to be expected. Many people say that VAG's last truly focused drivers cars were the early Golf GTI's (mk1 & 2) and the Corrado's.

The Leon should have similar handling to an Octavia though IMO.

Vtec Abuser,

That was a textual slip on my behalf. I meant the LCR feel better than the CTR. But I've never directly compared them on the same roads/surfaces etc.

Oh, and I don't like having to drive on the red line all the time, so it was probably the driving style I preferred.

Sorry... :o

You've got to go for the LCR ....they are something else in their own right!!!

I'd love one but I'm biased as I've already owned a Leon Cupra....they have a good re-sale value on a serious note:)

The early Golf GTI's were very nice but not focused drivers cars. The Mk 1 was quick but had very mediocre grip levels and awful brakes. In fact the brakes were heavily criticised at the time even by 70's standards!

I had two and they were good but I also had an Alfasud TI which was far faster from A to B due to ample four wheel discs and amazing handling. Yes I know build was very poor but ability wise they were great.

The new Golf GTI is by far the most focused and best ever. The MK 1 is an icon for many reasons, being a focused drivers car is not one.
