PID gripes

Featured Replies

As with (what seems like) all Citigo owners, I went for the PID - and while I think the device itself is pretty nifty, I'm astonished by the apparent lack of support from Navigon for us Mac users - and the fact that I've been supplied with a unit that is out-of-date for both software and Maps (Q4 2011 - really?).

Long story short, I've encountered all the issues reported elsewhere on this forum. I had some success with using VMWare with Windows xp to register my PID, but then hit the 'not enough space' issue for the upgrade.I tried the USB drive trick to bypass that, but just got a failed update. I got a beta version of Navigon Fresh for Mac, but still had the dreaded CG2006/9 issues. At this point, I decided to give up - I'm fairly technical, but I shouldn't have to jump through all these hoops to keep something working that I paid good money for!

Ultimately, the only advice from Navigon is to "use another computer", which I have explained to them is unacceptable - no dice. At least they have offered to update the discount code, if I'm ever able to use it.

At the moment, I've asked the dealer to get a response from Skoda about what they propose to do about supplying something that is already old and will be unlikely to be updated. Will add to this if I get anything...

Anyone else had success with trying to get Navigon or Skoda to play nice about selling me something that can't be supported by the supplier(s)?

What is 'PID' please??

It's a handy unit for mpg calculations and bluetooth, but I don't rate the sat nav at all.

Well if you have some time to spare have a read of my communications with Navigon. Though I haven't contacted them now for a few weeks......i'm giving them until the first week in February, and then I will raise stink every which way I can if the issues are not resolved. Just to confirm..I'm a Mac operator as well. I have to say that having been on the net for 20 years I have never come across a company that is so incompetent.

By the way my first PID completely bricked and failed to go beyond the splash screen in the first day or so and a replacement was agreed. The garage replaced it, but incomprehensibly have not returned it through the network.

The attached emails are virus free...don't worry, if you care to wade through them. You will either laugh or cry.

Wow...just wow. That's persistence, yet with no success. I'll persist with my correspondence with Navigon, but assume that their belligerance will carry on.

As I said, I'll update on whether Škoda decide that this is worthy of a response. It'll be interesting to see if there is a Sale Of Goods angle - I can't find any more references to the original scheme that the PID would be expandable with new apps in the future.

I called about the problem with updates failing due to insufficient space, and was told to go and buy a Sandisk memory card...! "We made a mistake, so please use your money to fix it."

Latest update from Navigon: my case is "still active" on their system, so they'll update me when they have a solution. Which, judging by Liam2's exchange (and others on these forums), will most likely be never.

I'm going to continue pressing the dealer for a response from Škoda, but might try a different tack with Navigon - if they can't give me the updates online, then can they provide them physically, either through a DVD or USB drive. Or even an SD card!

Be interesting to see how they respond to that. I have told them that I personally intend to pursue this to finality. I will want them to admit that the software does not function fully for Mac and never has since inception. You could never ever purchase anything through Navigon Fresh, and never reclaim the maps update voucher offered through it either. For some time now there is a 'CG2009' error preventing login, so that no activity is possible. In other words the PID can not be updated for firmware, maps, or anything else such as purchases etc. The unit is not 'of merchantable quality' nor fit for purpose for Mac computers. I will want them to publicly acknowledge this and recall all units sold to Mac customers that wish to return their unit through their dealers for full refunds. What they are doing is morally wrong and amounts to deception. I am surprised that Skoda and the other VAG companies have not rowed in in support of their customers. It will come home to roost though as they are in the first instance responsible for refunds under sale of goods/consumer protection, and it is up to them to seek redress from the supplier.

Latest Navigon response:

In amongst the usual platitudes of "as soon as new version of NAVIGON with solved issue will be release" and "it can also be that the issue will be solved with the next Mac OS update for example", they claim it is "not possible to update device with CD or SD". Interesting, given that members of this forum have done exactly that...and that the Navigon Fresh software actually encourages you to take an image of the device for backup/restore purposes! This clearly reassures me that the technical team fully understand their product.

Meanwhile, the dealer is waiting for a response from Škoda UK, so will update me as soon as possible. I wouldn't be surprised if their response was "have you tried downloaing the Navigon Fresh software?"

Navigon went suspiciously quiet over the weekend, but have finally responded to my (increasingly impatient) demands for an update on physical media...by suggesting that I use a PC.

Annoyingly, their website describes a method to update the device firmware by using an SD card, although they claim this "does not apply to the CG2009 error". They also maintain that the "backup restore function is not available" (I was actually talking about the part of Navigon Fresh that does work, and allows me to take a backup of the device to my computer). I suspect I'm hitting language barriers now.

One more try, then I'm going to go after Škoda themselves.

(side note: I admit that I've managed to borrow a copy of Windows Vista from a friend and drop it onto a vitual machine, which updated my PID no problem...but that's not the point, and I still can't get my map updates voucher to work)

Have you tried Trading Standards? They were brilliant with a Seat dealer I was having trouble with a few years ago.

I have consistently refused to follow their suggestion to use a Windows PC. They state that the unit is compatible with Mac. That is what I purchased and require. As you know the Navigon Fresh software provided for Mac is crippled as regards taking advantage of the discount coupon included, and never worked in that regard from launch at least a year ago, and the Navigon website does not recognise the voucher. However, I and others insisted on a workaround to pay in full on the website and then request a refund of the difference. That is what happened, but they don't offer it as an alternative and can be reluctant to agree. The support have to seek permission and communicate that to you and then you have to confirm having paid in full and again wait confirmation of refund. That won't work on a Mac computer now though as it is not possible to access the website at all with Navigon Fresh to subsequently download it or anything else for that matter.

The CG2009 error is still preventing login using the Mac Navigon Fresh software, since well before Christmas. I am not hopeful that all the issues with the Mac software in particular will be resolved, and my self imposed deadline is fast running out, when I intend to pursue this further with Skoda and draw the attention of the other VAG Group to it. I will contact trading standards here and I will write directly to Navigon Managing Director, as Support refused my request for all emails to be copied to Director level. My contention is that they should offer recall and full refund to any Mac user who wishes it, as it is not of merchantable quality and fit for purpose. Each dealership is in the first instance responsible for refund and they must take it up the line, so ultimately that's the route to take if Navigon don't provide satisfaction.

Oh, goodness, I'm not letting up on them - and I'm getting the impression that the corporate culture at Navigon is to avoid doing anything. The current email trail shows that they appear to be comfortable with a combination of not answering questions and just plain lying (for example: yesterday, I received a claim that the problem was now solved and the case could be closed).

I seriously believe that Navigon are not going to help, and that my best route will be to either make my dealer maintain the updates, or to get Škoda to offer a partial refund.

Just to say that I haven't forgotten this, but rather I'm still waiting for a response from Škoda. My dealer has spoken to head office, but isn't getting a particularly clear answer so far. It may actually come down to the suggestion from simon1 about Trading Standards...

Latest update:

1) My dealer came up with nothing, after chatting to various technical specialists, who declared it to be a "Microsoft thing".

2) I fired in a comment to Škoda UK asking for more information and a response to the problem.

2a) Silly me, did it late night before Good Friday, so no response during the long weekend.

3) The very pleasant John called back acknowledging that it was something they were aware of, but don't have a fix for.

3a) Best suggestion was to find a friend with a PC who doesn't mind doing the update for me.

3b) He also mentioned that he's aware of these forums and occasionally dips in, so: Hello John!

Ultimately, not much else there. John did emphasise that anyone else who has encountered this should let Škoda UK know about it, so they have more ammunition to push Navigon for a fix (and harass the people in Marketing, who I would see as being the people who forget to write things on the advertising like "Probably won't work with Macs, go and buy a PC instead, not our problem"). John did also suggest that the problem is unlikely to be fixed anytime soon.

Short of handing the PID back and demanding a refund under Sale of Goods, which would kind of defeat the point, I think that everything that can be done has been done. I'll give it a few months now and, if I'm still unable to update my maps (or operating system), then I might go back to Škoda UK and ask what they plan on doing about it now.

Cheers to those who have commented in support.

My gripe would be the fact you have to remove it each time you leave the car,as i would not want to leave it on show. Pity they could not have made a built in unit in the dash. Perhaps that will happen in a future update.

After somewhat of a delay...a possible solution!

Given that Garmin own Navigon, and noting the stories about the PID being a Garmin-branded device in the latest versions, I thought I'd see if Garmin have decided to use their own (usually quite good) software skills.

Lo! There is a Garmin-branded version of FRESH for Mac, which talks fairly happily to my Navigon-branded version and doesn't give any errors when connecting to the store, or checking for updates.

I've not tested it to destruction yet, and I'm unable to download the subsidised maps because my code has expired, but this should be fairly easy to sort out from this point onwards.

Anyone else with any comments? Liam2, I'm looking in your direction...

Hey guybles.....you da man!!!  The Garmin Fresh works!  Updated my Move and Fun device quite a few versions to the latest 7.10.5 and maps from 2011 to Q2/2013.  The Move and Fun will have to be connected to the car, as for a first time connection when the device software is updated, and then the server will recognise it.  The 'manual' voucher I got from Navigon back in November 2012 was recognised and there was no problem downloading the required maps Rep. Ireland and UK.  When I opted for all available maps I was told that space was short 76.04MB, but I can have the others when/if needed, up to 2015.  Maybe the Freshmaps voucher will work now??

Got to go out now, but will post more info later or answer any questions I can.  Thanks again for posting.

By the way my OS is 10.6.8.  Everything works, including phone and all displays are as before, including home screen.  Funny thing was that I didn't twig initially that the device would have to be rematched to the car, and I went to the Garmin website address given in Garmin Fresh when the error FS201 "device not supported by Fresh"appeared.  There I was asked to confirm the device and low and behold Skoda was one of the options, so I clicked on that, and 'contact' for support, using the 'other' Countries link, English only in Germany.  I explained briefly the problem with the Navigon Fresh (CG2009 error) and went on to say that your (Garmin) Fresh had allowed me to proceed to the point (error) error above.  At which point he said that I was actually speaking to Navigon support.  I must have been switched automatically when I confirmed Skoda as the make.  He made nothing of the fact I was using the Garmin Fresh and advised connecting the Move & Fun to the car and then it should be recognised through Fresh......and so it was.....connection via Garmin Fresh behaving normally.  Doesn't it take the biscuit that Navigon support leave us Mac guys in the lurch, and don't offer the Garmin Fresh as an alternative to the Navigon Fresh.  Being charitable...maybe they don't know it is an option, but there they were issuing Beta version, which didn't work,  and telling us that they were working on a software update, which never happened.

Initial update of device software took just over 2hrs on a 6.70Mbps download speed, inclusive of installation.  I forgot to note the finish time for the two maps, but it was soon enough, but the server download speed was slower than for the update.

Happy enough with how everything works except the media player .set the player to random from the sd card and its fine until you switch off and then on again later .the player resets itself to Playing the full file in which the current track is.why will it not retain the last setting before it was switched off?

Since the last update, I switch on my stereo and music will play and then cut out for a split second and then come back. Its very annoying!

I hope not! thats ideal for me a) there is a hidden draw for it in the car

B) I can take it out and use it in another car via usb for charging or handheld for navigation. A permenant unit would mean getting another satnav for the wifes car for example.

No, for me removable is a great idea.

Where is the hidden draw please?

Probably means the glasses drawer built into the glove compartment hatch.  Do Skoda supply a pouch for the PID?
