Pre fl 1.8 TSI mpg manual

Featured Replies

Thought it time for a change so bought a 57 1.8 TSI estate at the weekend, I previously had a 1.9 TDI SE Leon 130 but fancied a change as things felt like they were about to go wrong, I.e clutch and dmf, I did think about going for diesel again but for my money could only afford a high mileage 2.0 TDI 140. I then looked at petrol cars again and decided on the 1.8 TSI as it seemed to be a good mix of economy and performance, 38 mpg average, however at the moment struggle to get 28-30 mpg on my drive to work, that is 5 miles of small roads and 5 miles of dual carriage way, is this typical MPG for this car? as I was hoping to see about 33-34 mpg being as I drive quite economically. My TDI returned about 42 mpg for this journey in winter and i expected to take a hit in fuel costs, however just not this much, I checked my tyre pressures and all are 32psi so not under inflated, would this MPG be typical for the car ????

summer get 40 easy, at the moment getting 37, but its very cold which does effect mpg

20 miles each way commute for me.

It will improve when weather gets warm

This is not the computer reading, just putting 4 gallons in per week gets 160 miles

It might not be super mpg but the blend of performance and economy is hard to beat

enjoy and surprise a few Reps in TDi Audis and BMW!

Your commutes a bit further than mine, plus if you have an FL you'll have better economy than me, guess I might go for small run at the weekend and see what I get...gave it some stick in 2nd and 3rd on a dry road this am and it did seem to pick up well, no scalps taken though.....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the combined fuel economy figure for the Leon is 52 mpg.

Getting 42 mpg out of the Leon on your commute is 23.8% below the combined figure. (perhaps it's a stop start commute....or it's just your driving style!)

Applying the 23.8% reduction in combined economy to the 1.8 TSI you should expect 30.6 mpg from it on your commute.......which is about what you are getting.

Recall somewhere hearing that average fuel figures are averages of the Best and worst you could poss get in 'ideal' conditions. The 42 mpg was what I was getting about 2 weeks back, for the same journey and driving style in the summer I would get 50-52 mpg, and saw about 58 taking it real easy on a run. On my journey to and thro work at the moment I'm changing gear between 2000 and 2500 rpm and not exceeding 50 in 5th so think I'm driving fairly reasonably and thought I would have seen the figures I was expecting...

Hopefully it's just the cold weather.

As you got good figures in the Leon in summer, you should get better figures in the 1.8 TSI. You'll get a better idea when you do a few longer drives.

I forgot to mention, don't believe the trip computer MPG. Only use brim to brim calculated figures to assess fuel economy.

I think the old 1.9 tdi is more economical, I wouldn't mind betting the 2.0 tdi would be low 30's. My a3 tdi would average 37 on my daily commute, the cupra averages 27/8 mpg

I'll fill it this weekend and workout what it returns over the week, thx for the advice

Can't say I don't miss the shove it used to give me between 1750 and 2700 rpm

I get over 40 mpg on a moderate to long run, up to high forties if cruising around 60 mph

Under 40 mpg for anything else.

Well I can only hope to get these figures when the weather improves perhaps.. I'll fill her up at the weekend and see what I've got left the following weekend and do the maths...

Another thing to complicate MPG comparisons is the two versions of the 1.8 Turbo engine.

The 2008 and earlier engine (1.8 T FSI) which does 38 MPG combined,

The 2009 and later engine (1.8 TSI) which does 40 MPG combined.

The car has been used on Shell 95 ron the past year runs like a dream

V-Power makes no difference at all

Make sure you get oil changed regular and check oil level, some TSI`s like to use a bit

I've got the bzb engine which i thought was a TSI, says that on the back of the car and the engine cover, and hopefully the log book too when it comes back from the dvla.. I also run the car on shell 95 as it feels smooth and responsive enough for me..

Check the tyre pressures too, and also the air filter is clean

All tyres are 32 psi, I'll check and change the filter if neck at the weekend thx

I think it's the cold weather. Engine ticking over while I clear the frost/snow. All the kids being driven to school so slow slow stop stop slow driving! My maxidot average speed this morning was 14mph - normal is around 30. Fuel consumption the worst I have ever seen - 24mpg

My commute is 8 miles. 1st 3 miles are a slow crawl past 2 big schools, then 40-60mph A roads. In current weather the maxidot says 28-35mpg. In more normal conditions it is 35-42. Under more normal conditions the oil temperature gets above 90C, in this weather it barely gets above 80 even though the drive is slower and engine is running longer.

Wait for warmer weather - it WILL improve.

I will but check out the filter this weekend. The dealer (non-skoda) gave the car a service before i bought it however i noticed in the service book that they only ticked the oil change box so i will check the air filter this weekend, and take a look at the plugs. I had the car inspected by Dekra prior to purchase and this came back all good..
