power steering pump fluid whats the level from cold

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me what the level should be from cold checked this morning and the dip stick was not showing a fluid mark

You need to screw the cap down then take the reading. If you don't it can/will read empty.

same as when hot isnt it?

When cold it should really have been high enough to wet the lower face of the indicator built into the cap - well for the TRW system.

I know the measure of it is when the cap is screwed down then you take a measure but its not showing anything on the dipstick i am sure its when its hot it expands but what a carry on to check it needing to take the battery tray out typical dealers trying to stop you servicing your own car

I'll play along, what exactly do you think is going to heat your PAS fluid sufficiently for significant thermal expansion to take place?

You check it when it's cold, if you check it when it's warm it won't have noticeably changed level, it's not engine oil, if it's not registering on the dip stick you have lost fluid, this would suggest a leak which needs investigating. As to removing the battery tray it's a minor inconvenience, nothing major and certainly nothing to do with the dealers, they sell/maintain cars, not design them.

Wrong!....................

There are two levels as stated even in the haynes manual...................cold is the fluid is just wetting the end of the dipstick built into the cap...hot is further up the dipstick.................don't have my Haynes to hand!

And my car (1.4 16v) has the smalled battery box so I don't have to remove it to get at the PAS fluid!

The fluid is pumped to the steering rack and therefore forced...............friction causes heat which is why it gets "hotter" than cold!

Go double check your Skoda owners handbook or the Haynes manual.........
