Insurance (Black Boxes) Problems

Featured Replies

Well Recently got one installed by insurance company and had nothing but a head ache with it, phoned up to get them to resend the engineer out, as hes just thrown the box in at the fusebox and it's rattle about like a son of a~

so engineer came out same guy that installed it, now this is where is started to get pi55ed off, the guy said whats the problem, i said to him that on idle theres vibration and on cornering, coming from behind the dash, "oh i used 3 tie wraps and stuck it to the side of your vent thingy" he said, now i wasn't amused as it was a smug reply, now he puts the key in the ignition it's a cold start and about 2

° outside and just started the car right away, not even giving the glowplugs a chance to kick in, then he starts reving the car from idle

too about 3500~4000, i can't hear anything he says

So now i'am really pi55ed off with this guy, he said ah well must be something else behind the dash thats vibrating and thegoes on to say the same as before about the tie wraps

so now i prompted a responce from him by saying to i have to get someone else to insulate it from vabration, he says i'll justcancel your policy, i've never felt to angry, but what can i do?

Feels as if i'am in a hole now

Didn't know they were doing the black box thing yet. It reduces your insurance premium I assume?

If you have just started your policy I cant see a problem cancelling it. Just go elsewhere :)

Yes, they're becoming increasingly common. Confused.com even has it as a selectable option (whether you want one or not). I have no doubt in time 99% of insurers will adopt them and there will be massive premiums for not having one.

They can be cheaper, but not necessarily, depending on mileage/time of day restrictions.

That engineer was an arsehole. I would go elsewhere and tell them its because of the attitude of their engineers.

i would literally tell him to stick the box where the sun doesn't shine.....f*ck that is anyone fitting a box in my car!

complain complain complain. Make such an annoyance of yourself that it is less effort for them to deal with your problem, reimburse you and possibly something extra for him ******* with your car than it is for them to ignore you. Cold starting and revving a diesel like that is unnacceptable. I think I would have told him to **** off if he treated my car like that.

You need a better insurance policy

Have you spoken to any brokers ?

There's probably a specialist modified vehicle policy better suited to your car, without cop-box.

Then you need to find a catholic/orthodox priest, to carry out an exorcism on the car

Well it's £100 a month for my Fiance as shes just past her test back in nov, and before that was i £160 a month

been tempted but it's getting the deposit again that puts me off

you have no idea how close i was to going into hulk mode with the guy i was that furious

its the hidden box in the car that he fitted that you have to worry about (i hear they put them in the central tunnel), thats got a direct link to the govt, and the one that you mention is a dummy box;>, they got ya now!

even an exorcism may not gtee saving the car

on a serious note, try adrian flux, chris knot, brentacre, herts, greenlight am sure there are more, all are brokers as suggested already that will provide a better product to suit your needs (and probably cost a lot less)

Oh adrain was a laugh, i called them, said to them about being a briski member, oh yes sir the premium is 3'400, thats the best we can offer..

but i aint tryed the other, but defo worth a shout, ta mate.

I, personally wouldn't want one fitting.

These are what is measured to tell if you're a "good" driver:

  • your location
  • how long you've been driving for
  • how rapid or measured your acceleration is
  • how harsh or smooth your braking is
  • your cornering

These don't particularly have an influence on you being a good driver or not and rapid acceleration or braking doesn't make you a bad driver.

I would be too scared to get my foot down joining a dual carriageway etc. I fear this type of box is going to bring about a whole new generation of doddery dithering drivers through fear of their premiums going up!

thing is i don't mind the box, just not the way it's been installed and general attitude, the guy looked like a junky, scruffy and talking through his nose, but when are you ever right and they are wrong, but i got the fiance to call up the insurance, they were helpful, so they are sending someone else out at our request as we don't want the mong that came out on both occasions, but now i've got too put up with drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr on idle and cornering and when gf is on biting point on the clutch, the joys......

honestly thinking about ripping the thing out

I have had a box in my car for 2 years, couldn't get a premium below £3500 on the vRS without one, now paying £800 fully comp, yes it monitors your driving, but you dont have to drive like a saint, aslong as you dont drive everywhere at 120 then its ok, I love fast acceleration, and I haven't had any warnings for it, the only time I ever had a warning was for speeding, and for when I was rear ended.

The speeding was justified as it was when my old man was in hospital and i was booting it everywhere to get to him, 2am empty roads,

but generally I will drive at 80 down the A19 and don't get any warnings for speeding, I watched them put the box in my car, and it was secured properly and no hidden extra boxes.

Also means if anyone steals my car it has a tracker fitted,

I can see why people wouldn't want them, but when its saving me well over £2000 a year its great, + policy's aren't just based on no claims, so good driving = even cheaper insurance the following year,

Well, I'm sorry to be such an arse (whenever am I not, though), but when insurance premiums get THAT stooopid, it's time to re-evaluate what car it is you drive. Nobody is sticking some poxy box in MY car. Unless it's me. And it does something useful.

... you dont have to drive like a saint ...

Problem is, the tech is in, then the BRAKE bunch take over ...

I fear this type of box is going to bring about a whole new generation of doddery dithering drivers through fear of their premiums going up!

imo this is exactly what they'll do

Even if the monitoring is not directly linked to the DVLA/CPS, people will drive like it is.

Those that have them fitted will never learn to drive their cars either.

As if we don't already have roads full of dangerous doddery dithering drivers :dull:

thing is its start of the end as phil said, it will create a whole new league of didery drivers!

Plus why should we accept someone monitoring how we drive ffs, its a joke! then what next, a box that won't physically allow you over 70......you can see where its going!

other thing i would be worried about, is say you regularly do over 70, ie 80 as stated, and you then have an accident, insurance then can prove you drive over the limit and have a get out clause for paying for your claim...

its the hidden box dude, thats the problem one, i tend to wear a tin foil hat to help evade them...hehehe

I never watched the guy install the box as i was needed in the house to help out the fiance with the monsters, but now i wish i was there watching exactly what he was doing, but being a person thats been "trained" on how to install these boxes i missplaced my faith and trust in him

my general rule...is never trust anyone to work on my car, but me....

on the odd occasion i don't do something, i watch over them like a hawk....time and time again have seen bodge work that supposed experts have done for others, makes you sick really!
