AGE OLD DEBATE - whats better?

Featured Replies

tell that to my mate, who drove through a big puddle after brands last year in his mk4 gti...he hydrolocked the engine! It was one that amd sold him, and it fitted right down in the wheel arch area, way below the headlight.

If i was gonna fit one, it would be like yours, or a jabba style one with a proper heat shield in the bay, with a feed to that carefully routed.

i remember a good 4 /5 years ago there was a prept meet at brands and to say it rain would be an understatment. it was bouncing a good foot n half off the floor. instant flooding all over the place. There was at least 5 or 6 cars along the way out of brands that had died from the rain locking them up. That was the day i decided i would never get one! As you say, the ones me and Bowders have are a bit higer than the other "expensive" makes. you just got to drive with some savvy.. big puddle.. dont drive through it!

i help up Sidcup high street once, theres a small railway bridge near the station and the road dips under and floods. i had to stop.. reverse a little then throw a U`y! The abuse i got from people was unreal but fk em! it dont take a rocket engineer to put 2 and 2 together... slammed car.. massive puddle! lol.

No fears with a mighty drilled box though! :p

WoW, thanks for all the ideas, info and feedback - very much appreciated. I think I'll smooth and drill box for a bit more tone (personal preference), upgrade to a pipercross filter, then attempt to increase feed to 3" (btw whats the best way to attach to air box - mutilate entrance to airbox a little??) then see how that goes/sounds before spending some extra ££'s on a 007p lol

thanks again guys!

why? it'll have no benefit other than maybe more noise!

Personal preference tbh - still young and daft lol :)

If you want more responsive, changing the airbox alone isn't going to do that. Potentially make it more jumpy, but not more responsive. If you want to actually gain anything, you'll need to remap afterwards.

Personally I'd leave the box alone as per Mr G's suggestions. I've spent loads of time and money experimenting with airbox/filter mods on my bike in the past, along with rolling road remaps, and quite frankly the standard box was best for all round range. If you want absolute top end power then there may be advantages. But these things are usually better designed than many people give them credit for.

Your time and effort on a bike is not the same as the VRS though , so you can't compare. I have on my vrs and although the rollers was around just 1bhp with CAI, that is negligible I agree due do so many variables that can occur, the real gain is the way the car feels on the road.

CAI is better on mine.

I have done all the airbix mods over time.

But my car is a mapped one so to OP with your std state tune all you are talking about is looks and noise differences really. So you choice

i always said this, i was always game for a modded air box and 3" pipe from the bumper... BUT.. i tried a CAI on mine and ill never look back. my filter sits just below the bottom of the head light. to hydrolock the car i would have to go through a 2ft deep puddle!!

i love mine, and it sounds the breasts too :)

my 50ps worth

+1

Sorry as I replied to this post before

You have to be a complete numpty to do that and going too fast for road conditions. Simple. ....

The CAI was obviously exposed to the wheels maybe with no arch liner. Lots of reasons that you can't blame the CAI for.

Sent from my Galaxy S3.

to be fair, a local tuner fitted it, liner was present, when i checked the car it literally was at the cars lowest point!

what scrapping on the road..........

That is silly then.......I would of thought tuner would at least state be careful.

If car owner present, then makes it even worse if he was aware and then did not take careful driving through high water.

Right, the time has come to make my first engine mod - breath easy.

Induction kit / panel filter / drilled box and bigger relocated feed???

I've heard loads of stories / ways to do this (and horror  stories) and they all seem to have the same story - MINES BETTER!!!!

Bet you wish you never asked now......

This theme will continue with mixed answer and personal preference.

It all boils down to your choice buddy.

Cheaper option - do nothing and leave as is but consider replacing to std panel filter

Slightly dearer option - de fin air box internals and fit external 3" ducting from airbox to bumper to get cold air in

Dearer option - get performance panel filter and still do combination of mods above

Slightly noiser option - as above but drill a few holes on the under side away from the engine

Dearest option and best noise - Fit a CAI

I did a thread in techi on messing with airbox although have a CAI fitted now for my best state of tune.

Whilst I wouldn't even attempt to argue with your results, I have to point out that definning an airbox is a bad idea. They are there for good reason. It would be equally daft to remove the venturi from a carburettor. Airflow is not necessarily at it's best, or should I say most efficient for combustion when it had a smooth direct path. There is an awful lot more than goes into it than just that. Easy way to loose bottom end. Yes there may be top end gains, but that's totally missing the bigger picture.

especially the size of this tuner in the vw 'scene', and the amount they charge!
