Switched live not working.. can't get new radio to work

Featured Replies

Got a new pioneer dab radio

Changed the aerial on the back for a new dab/fm/mw amplified one

Ran the cable all the way through the headlining to the radio console and tried the radio to make sure it worked before I fitted it in the dash

Everything worked beautifully, the only thing I had to do was change the red/yellow wires around.

Went to fit it in the dash and it was a right PIG, the wires were stopping it being pushed in fully and I spent 2 days trying to get it right so it would actually clip into place

Today I finally managed it and the radio doesn't work now so out it all came, tried it out of the dash and nope it still doesnt work.

The switched live has no power to it (it actually has 0.5v) but that might as well be zero.

I had to remove the coin holder and switches for the heated rear window and fuel filler flap, when I put them back in I noticed the light for the heated rear window doesn't work anymore (not sure if the window works It got too cold to test anymore after a few hours in the snow)

I checked all the fuses and every one of them is working fine

Oh I did remember to cut and insulate the K line wire to the radio AFTER I noticed it wasn't working, so I wonder if that blew something what stops the switched live working, yet none of the fuses are blown.

So I'm stumped

Anyone got any ideas what it might be?

I've given it up now till tomorrow.

Google up on "S-Contact" - have a vague memory of this having something to do with the switched live ignition setting,

I've searched "Terminal S" and the only thing that comes up is the ignition switch wiring faulty

I can't see that being the problem as it was working perfectly earlier, the radio fuse would have blown before the switch got damaged,

I think the heated rear window only actually works when the engine is running - so was the engine running when you tried that?

  • Author

yes I tried it with just the ignition on and with the engine running, doesn't work with either

Is there any relay or wiring in common with the heated rear window and the radio switched live?

The heated rear window definitely works fine, it's just the indicator light in the switch that isnt

However I still have no idea why the radio live isnt working

Has anyone any ideas to throw around for me to check/try?

Does the background green illumination still work in the switch? I am thinking dodgy earth....

If you put the original skoda HU back in, does that work and does the HR light them work?

nope

I've checked the wiring out with a multimeter

The normal live has 12V on it

THe switched live is dead, well it's showing as 0.5v but I reckon thats my meter not calibrated properly

The fuses are all ok, I took every one out and tested them all

Checking voltage with a multimeter is not good enough. You should use a test light for load conditions. A bad earth may still show 12V until you actually draw current. Not saying this is the case, but...

Have you tried probing for voltage further down the switched line live with a hyperdermic probe?

OP just to clarify

Did you have the stero plugged and working before you inserted it into the DIN hole ?

Then inserted stero

Now the stero itself is dead and the switched live connector on the DIN plug is dead ?

The things I'd test are:

Does stero still work with both its power leads using perm live

It sounds like you need to test switched live in other locations, ideally as close to switch relay as poss

Yes to all those

Any idea where to find another switched live?

You say close to switch relay? Is there one? and if so where?

you can take a live from under the dash think its the middle one there are 3 main ones under there

better to get a switched live though if you can, as otherwise if you leave it on, when you stop the car, it will drain the battery.

Ideally I need to find out why the radio switched live has stopped working

Does anyone know where it actually comes from? or is there anything else on that circuit that I can see if it's stopped working?

I could imagine that inserting the new HU you have trapped/pinched the switched live wire and broken it.

From reading another post it sounds like you have taken an alternative approach to fixing it, but I would try with the new HU not installed in the hole and wiggle the cables about to see if you can the ignition live to work. gentle wiggling along the cable might indicate where the break is.

I thought about the wire being broken but I'm pretty sure it isn't

On further checking I found the warning buzzer that goes off when you take the key out of the ignition doesn't work now

So it seems to be something in common with the radio live and the warning buzzer

Anyone got a circuit diagram of the electrical wiring that might show me what they have in common, or where the lives actually come from?

Maybe your ignition switch is knackered then....

Wierd

The buzzer is working again.

I;m wondering if I opened the door wide enough when I checked it earlier, I'm pretty sure I did but cant be certain

I still need to trace the radio ignition live wire if anyone has a circuit please?

The yellow and black wires on the back of the fuse block - 75 X connector iirc

ps

not 100% the din-plug switched goes through there, I'd run a new wire from fuse block to be sure
