has anyone had a problem with the handbrake on a 03 on drums my apprentices car had ripped the mounting bracket off the floor pan is this a common fault

Well, I have to say, forgetting any localised rusting and/or incorrect fabrication at the factory, I'd think that this is down to someone not recognising a seized or partially seized handbrake cable and/or shoes. Though it must be said that some VW Lupo and Polo 6N and corresponding Seat offerings, did manage to end up with similar issues.
