Tax on car which has had private plate taken off

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I am about to buy a new car. The car had a private reg on, which the current owner has had removed. He dvla have sorted the plates, tax etc and updated the system however the v5 will take up to 4 weeks to arrive. The tax is due at the end of Feb and he owner says that the dvla have stamped the existing logbook and greenslip with the new reg until the new v5 arrives. He seems to thonk that it will be ok to tax the car on its new reg using the old green slip with the old private reg on with this stamp.

Has anyone any experience in this type of thing?

no experience myself but, if the new Tax Disc has the old reg on it, theoretically you could be fined for displaying an incorrect disc I would have thought?

Confused,

is he still the owner right now, ?

& if he has insurance still can he go online and get the tax on it before you buy it?

Makes it simple, give him the money for the tax.

If it is not you as Registered Keeper yet & matching Insurance certificate, then thats your problem.

IF he has changed things already at the DVLA office the car should have the Disc Issued now showing the Reg Number issued now

not his personal number

& the MOT Certificate if it needs one changed/printed at the DVLA office.

The car has been changed to the new plates and the current tax disc has had the new reg put on too. The tax runs out at the end of february but the V5 is still on the old plate but stamped by the dvla office with the new reg while the new v5 is sent out.

He couldnt go online as the reg on the reminder is also the old one...

So you will be issued with a new registration for the car then? or it's original? Presumably you will insure it against this, if so then I can't see there being a problem.

The only way to test is to either goto or ring your local DVLA and discuss:

Firth Court

Firth Road

Lincoln

LN5 7WD

However what George is saying does appear to make sense as the tax against Registration Number 1 will have ceased as the the car & plate don't match up so it will be issued against registration number 2?

Suspect that in the background at the DVLa the systems will be aligned, but as the reminder is against the old number you may have to do in person at dval or post office.

Who was sent the reminder,

the previous registered keeper or are you now the keeper on the DVLA database?

I haven't bought it yet. The current owner has been to the DVLA to get the private reg removed today which has been done. I was just concerned that as the V5 with the new reg won't arrive before the tax is due at end of feb I would have trouble taxing it.

The four weeks is a nonsense.

You usually get back the new V5c within two weeks at the most these days.

I had one back early in January in 4 working days.

So it may turn up any day and then there is no problem. :)

I transfer the reg of a car last year and the v5 came back in about a week.

I wouldn't worry he will get the new V5 back by the end of Feb. easily. Usually takes about 10 to 14days.
