Boost guage for TDIs?

Featured Replies

Where would one get a boost guage from capable of registering the sort of pressures diesel turbo's use? I know petrol ones are quite common, but I've not seen diesel ones EVER, and would quite like to fit one whilst my engine is out and accessible. ;)

Apparently its quick job using just some pipe and the guage. I guess there's a T involved somewhere?

Apparently, there's no point as the diesel boost pressure above idle is prety constant - the dial just goes up and stays there... anybody knows otherwise, feel free to correct me. You'd want a 2 bar gauge anyway if you wanted it, they're not hard to come by. Get a black-faced Racetech 2-bar gauge and fit a green LED for the backlight to make it match the standard stuff.

PD's have a variable turbo, this gives variable pressure so if the gauge is accurate enough this should be seen on the gauge.

Bought a "spare" intercooler downpipe, drilled a hole in it and fitted a self-tapping valve, replaced factory-fit one and screwed the boost tube and (Fast & the Furious) turbo gauge to it. Taped gauge to scuttle panel, outside the cabin and drove around a bit. It does indeed work quite well, but won't read vacuum.

Suppose I'll have to try and get the boost tube into the cabin one day...

Diesels don't make much in the way of vacuum. There's no throttle butterfly to close, so you won't see the high vacuum levels you would in a petrol car when the throttle is closed. At high RPM the turbo has spooled up, so there's positive pressure.

Well - no worries - I have a little something on the way. ;)

i've found where u can get -20 psi vacum at idle up to 0 vacum at acceleration in a furby vrs....

... The pipe that comes off the actuator on the turbo...

That's not fed from a vacuum pump, is it?

Havent a clue, it comes straight from the actuator to the box on the far left of the engine, looks like it relays info to the ecu...

I found that one too, before I drilled into the intercooler pipe. Was wondering if I could T off from there to get either reading. It reads vacuum, but no boost...

Yep, just waiting for the piece to screw into the intercooler now, or did u kinda bodge it in a bit?

Jason, Hows the project progressing?

John

I bought a part from Derv Doctor that spaces out the MAP sensor and gives a boost feed, but it turned out it was the wrong part number. I'm currently waiting for the right bit.

is there not a boost pipe coming from the back of the inlet manifold ????

Taking my time now - but nearly got all the bits ready now. :)

Including something related to this thread. :)

Got some decent bits and some (expensive, but flexible) boost tube - waited ages for that to be delivered! Thought that tapping into the intercooler pipe would be the most reversible mod.

My only problem is finding a way into the cabin for the tube - got all the electrics, home-made a gauge pod which fits under the head unit etc. etc.

Alltough this is my octy assembly, thoughted that it could be usefull for someone:

This was done in public place as showoff:

Gauge sits for now with 3M tape, but that will change. Gauge is industrial one, and because there's really no vacuum, the indication is from 0 to 2.5bar. Cost for assembly was 27
