Garages getting worse?

Featured Replies

Recently went to independent garage to have some part worns put on the work shed (no lectures about part worns please) so you can imagine its more like a back street garage, to which you have back street mechanics.

Now i tend to prefer these kind of places as their normally down to earth honest people once you show that you know your arse from your elbow and also dont charge the earth.

So when back to this place i had been before, requested some premium part worns, pulled the car in and misheard him saying park it here..i parked it there..simple mistake easily rectified but he went about making a point how crap women drivers are, now this straight away boiled my blood (and tbh i should of walk out there and then but anyways) He continues with this 'banter' for some time, really insulting and rather shocked me, even saying to the other half 'how do you put up with her?!'

Then come the spanner monkey to put my wheels back on, happily uses the windy gun to tighten them all the way up, no torque wrench in sight and treats my car like its going to the scrap heap (turns out he has striped a thread..mint)

Second garage rung today for the a new clutch and DMF to be fitted, i say jokingly that its way over due but the car is not used as much now so ive let it wait, his reply..urgh typical bloody woman, just ignores problems on cars..needless to say i got what information i needed and hung up. He has just lost my business.

What is going on..whats happened to customer care?! I am completely disgraced in the behavior, is it just me being a woman that i receive such crap service?

Quick answer...........no.

These people will treat all their customers with similar distaste. You just happen to be a woman therefore its an easy stereotype to pick on.

Vote with your feet :)

I LOL in the face of garages that treat people (and cars) like what you've just discribed.

Last local garage i took my car too did the same with the whole air gun and not bothered to torq it up. He got told how to do his job :D

It is hard to find a good place, I'm lucky to have freinds who own garages and do top work, not got anyone you know to ask for a good garage?

tbh its the season of the kn08s, cause i had the some similar crap happen with a engineer fitting a black box to my car, lack of respect and he was right and i was wrong

The first garage was just a joke, just an independent tyre and exhaust so i can quite easily find another.

The other hand, the 2nd garage even sponsors this very forum, have been browsing their goods for some time. DMF and clutch are not cheap and then there was fitting so in fairness i was spending a good sum of money you'd think this would increase the service of customer care as they want to make the sale.

It just irritates me so much as i know exactly what im talking about and i know what state my DMF and clutch are in so dont tell me that im a typical bloody woman as i am for from it.

Well, tbh, not all woman all fall in to the same group, i mean my fiance, knew nothing about cars and neithere did i, then when i got sick of forking out £50 for brakes to get done i just observed and did it all myself and picked it up rather easy, now i'am a step off of setting up timing belts, but with me learning my fiance also, but it is good to know what your talking about when in garages, then when they try to hit you with aload of shiet you know when to walk away, too bad your down south, or i would help you out with changing the clutch, but thats why i'am glad i got a smf conversion, clutch kits for me are £130, and labor free

hope you find somewhere decent.

If they disrespect you to your face, how the hell can you trust there work ?, I would ave got in the car and drove off " simples"

:swear: :swear: :swear: :swear:

As seboni121 says, and that's without considering that I know EJ is a qualified mechanic herself.

Are you taking the car back to the 1st garage to replace the stripped thread? Both sound like a bunch of cowboys, motor trade is quiet around here at the moment, you'd think they would be gratefull for the work.

Im not going to bother taking it back to the first garage as the wheel had to be back so i put a another in, their not exactly going to give me anything other then a snotty sorry..if im lucky!

Dont get me wrong i do like banter, it breaks the ice but when your blatantly targeting me because im a female it just crosses the line for me.

Reminds me when my wife was looking for a new car. She had saved for 12 years and short list included a Merc sporty thing. Went to dealer, salesman came up to me and asked if he could help. My wife said it was her purchase, he said Oh, looking at me, wants does she want. We walked out, bought a 370z, fabulous service - never looked back.

Are these people seriously saying this in front of you and in your face, otherwise it might be the way you are portraying the situation, or hearing what you are expecting from said mechanic/grease monkey.

I just find it hard to believe people are discriminating like this in a workplace right in front of you.

Name and shame the garages.

Daughter tells me she gets similar treatment .She's learnt to filter it out ,knowing what id BS as hubby is a serious biker , and she's a keen biker .She now takes him along and thr respect quotient has upped significantly . If he has to go to a place ,she will pick one with bike keen blokes ,as there's more chance of them either knowing her ,or getting some respect .

Believe me it was right to my face, when i mentioned i had city & guilds level 3 in motor vehicle he just 'pfft thats just a bit of paper, all college is about is copy and paste'' :@

Honestly i have never come across someone so disgustingly rude.

First Garage, 'TES' Tyre and Exhaust Services Warelands way Ind Est Middlesbrough

And second one which is pretty sad to say was Dark Side Developments.

That is shocking. Didn't expect that from darkside. They seem to be trying hard to get a good reputation, then do something like that!

Nor did i. Theres certain levels of banter and that is just abit too close for comfort towards a new customer

I personally deal with every customer that comes into the garage I work at as well as actually repairing the cars, doing the MOT's, invoices ect. I have a great relationship with my customers, we have a laugh, bit of banter, they get a good job done at a fair price and everyone's a winner. The garage itself is a bit of a dump to be honest, [not my doing!] but that doesn't matter to the customers that always come back to me. That's because I know them. However, I wouldn't dream of bantering with a new customer until I got to know him/her, and I certainly wouldn't set out to be anything like as rude to any customer in the way that Ema_jane experienced.

This i completely agree with, i often have banter with the staff, once i get to know them, you dont just call someone a typical woman (although this could not be further from the truth) when you have only spoken to that person for 30 seconds. It may not been offensive to a certain degree but it will (and has) lose business.

Why go somewhere you feel inferior

ive not really ever encountered the same levels of misogynism before really. thats shocking...

but I admit the tyre place i use actually has 2 female fitters and they are both very good, ive even seen them explaining to a male customer how to check and inspect tyres for roadworthyness, its quite surreal really. epic win for girl power
