Alternator?

Featured Replies

Had my car mot'd yesterday. Replaced bulb but i cracked the number plate lens. Had to drive car in wet conditions last night and noticed lights faing on the dash, wipers slowing down then airbag light, esp and another yellow light came on. Managed to get the car home but turned ignition off. Now not enough juice to start it. Any suggestions as to fault finding? Im assuming an alternator.

Also wondered if co-incidence or if its something been disturbed by mot tester.

I would start by checking the plastic fuse box on top of the battery and see if it has started to melted. Then check the crimp connections, and the large cable to the alternator for high resistance.

Jump start the car and see what voltage you get across the battery (should be around 14.1vdc).

I very much doubt the MOT tester will have disturbed something, and if he did then it suggests that something is not as it should have been in the first place.

This happend to me few weeks ago, turns out it was my alternator that needed replacing ;-)

When it happened to me those symptoms were the fuse box on top of the battery, open it up check for melted plastic around the first fuse on the left as you look at it from the front

Sent from my Galaxy S3, not a Crapple!

Need to test all the known problem wiring areas before you can even diagnose the alternator properly. Check battery terminals and connections first. Follow wiring from alternator and check the connectors you find along the way.
