Poor diesel mpg mystery

Featured Replies

Hi.

I have a diesel felly. I would usually get 400 miles to a full tank. My daily commute changed last summer and I am now doing a 4 mile stop start run twice a day. Since October I have noticed I am getting between 340 and 370 miles from a full tank. I changed the filters and oil around 1000 miles ago. Any idea what would cause poor economy or is it this normal for winter town driving?

Hi, I'm no diesel expert but two factors spring to mind:

  • You'll notice a drop off in mpg with short running. The car struggles to reach/maintain normal operating temp with the net result of more fuel used.
  • Seasonal factor, the colder ambient winter temps tend to affect mpg.

The reduction you're experiencing could be quite plausible given the change in commuting etc. ;)

I'm hoping its just the change in my driving habits. Reckon it's time for a petrol felly.

I'm lead to believe the diesel Fellys are on the whole more fuel efficient than their petrol equivalents. I'm averaging around 35 to 40 with my 1.6 mpi but the 1.9d should exceed that. ;)

Mine (a1.9 diesel estate) has averaged over 46mpg during the last year and a half since I started counting. On a good long run (usually with 3 adults a dog and luggage on-board I regularly get over 52mpg (even with a small trailer sometimes) but on local journeys with just me it comes down to the mid 40s. During the colder months it has fallen as low as 36mpg for local runs.

I never bothered to calculate for my old 1.3 but I used to get to a similar mileage before the orange light came on.

Sounds about right Red Studio. I can't typically equal that in mine nor would I expect to :'(

Dump the dog. Less fur, better mileage

He's a greyhound so he may be quicker than the car anyway

Stop-start (more acceleration, and probably more time stationary) is bad for fuel in anything except a Toyota Pious. Add to that that 4 miles is maybe just enough time to get a diesel warmed up...

On the run to work along the M20/26/25, at a steady 60, with the windows open and the back open, I could get about 45mpg out of The Fun.

I was reading about the EGR blanking and re-direction in the Octavia II section (elephant mod). I vaguely recall something similar in here for helping the diesels along. That might help things a little.

Yep, on a nice steady motorway run I can hit the dizzy heights of the mid 40's
