Optimal rev range for acceleration

Featured Replies

If the 2.0 CR (vRS) engines are more petrol like in there power band/range what revs I should be doing when accelerating, to achieve best speed?

Minimum revs would be above 2000rpm for the turbo to be kicking in.

Then just let it rev out without going to the red line. Up to about 4000rpm should do it.

I think a DSG will change at about 4000rpm in D with it floored.

I don't think I've ever had it at 4000RPM !

Might go for a blast on the way home to see what it's like.

My old Honda 2.2CDTi revved like a lunatic, it took me a while to realise it though, I was always changing up quite early.

Haha.

You need to get them a blasting sometimes. I've always done it with my cars and they've always run very well.

In a PD there's not too much point going much past 3000-3500rpm. I drove a 1.6 CR 105 the other day and the drove very differently and really liked to be revved.

Starts to die off after 3500 I've found when on the motorway in 4th. Not sure when the torque peaks as I've not seen a graph for it.

The best range for acceleration is between maximum torque and maximum power, revving beyond max power is a waste of time and energy. That will give you best accceleration. If you want the best compromise between economy and performance then use the rev range around max torque, usually around 2-2,500 revs with a diesel car as that is the speed at which it will produce the best specific fuel consumption, i.e. the most fuel efficient production of energy.
