Having a bit of a panic as my car has been playing up. Big time.

Today I finally plugged in the BT module to the cable (I'm doing a lot of running around at the moment and need to keep in touch with people) and now the car won't start...

There are loads of lights on the dash (that don't go out) and three loud beeps from the dash area accompanied by lots of clicking from behind the dash area. Car won't start or even turn over.

Prior to plugging in the BT module, everything worked fine as I had to move the car on the driveway this morning. I still have electrics - interior and exterior lights, stereo, but can't start the car (it's an '07 pre-FL).

I've checked all the fuses (all OK) and am just going to disconnect the battery for 10 minutes to see if it resets.

I did a VCDS scan prior to plugging in the BT and everything seemed reasonable (at least no unexpected fault codes). Now I have lots on virtually everything.

Help, please. I need to be able to rely on my car as I'm all over the place for the next few weeks. Any advice gratefully appreciated.

That does fit with the stereo going off automatically (I had it playing whilst moving some trim) and the dash display resetting itself. Although I'm confused as to how everything else seems to work.

Had battery disconnected for 20 mins and reconnected it with same problem. Although it looked 'normal' until I tried turning the key. Then I got the dash lights and clicking noises from behind the dash display and also the glovebox.

VCDS scan after reconnecting the battery and trying the ignition (although the Terminal 30 problem flagged up in an earlier scan in '01: Engine' seems to have disappeared...

Think I need to get it tested and replaced if necessary: or is there a possibility of a more serious fault? (bad earthing?)

Car is on 120,000 miles and I don't have any records of the battery being changed (certainly not in the three and a half years I've had it).

Right then,

I was carrying out some simple coding on my fathers '59 plate Octy II (comfort indicators amongst other things) and this kerfuffle ensued

Dad uses auto lights, and it transpires my nephew had also been playing with his interior lights. We were working on the car for about 30 minutes with doors open and ignition turned one notch for VCDS to recognise the car.

The upshot was one flat battery!! As you couldn't start the car, clicking (a lot) and dash lit up like a xmas tree, xenons flashing all over the place etc.

Called the RAC and battery was way below half power. Chappie put it on charge for about 40 mins and it was upto 3/4 charge and enough to start the car. Took it for a drive for about an hour and it's been fine since.

Didn't half scare the crap out of me though.

So re-reading your post, is your BT module draining your battery? or as you say it could be that the stereo being on has drained it just enough for it not to start :(

The BT module (although new to me) was only plugged in for a few minutes, but the doors had been open and the stereo on for 45+ minutes. So most likely the latter that has caused the problem.

Thinking about it, I have CHL activated so the lights would have been on as well while I was running the scans.

Hopefully you are right and a charge and long run will put it back to 'happy' status again.

See! There's the problem, why do Skoda fit a 61Ah battery to a diesel? Guaranteed not to last long, could do with another 20Ah really.

Cause they're cheapskates.... SWMBO Seat 1.9PD has a 72ah. My BL 61ah ...bonkers. Guess they don't care as long as it gets past the 3 years warranty/skoda assist period. On a slightly different but related topic it's the same with golf trollies- yes I'm sad. They come as standard with 18 hole batteries and last 2-3 years if you're lucky, I boughht mine with a 36 hole version whichwas more expensive but is now 5 years old and is still going strong. Guess it's the same with the Octy battery as SUK look to save a few quid at our ultimate expense

Would be a much better choice than a 60Ah one

Providing it fits I'd go for the bosch, unless you intend getting rid of the car in the next 2 years. If you are you might be better saving your money as the next owner would get all the benefit?

Agree the original batteries are under powered. I'll be changing mine soon to a more powerful one.

I had exactly this issue with the old 61 Ah battery. Was prob on way out, but I flattened it with it plugged into vcds with ignition on for 20 mins. Scared me too until I realised it was a flat battery. Got me an 80 odd ah one to replace with 5 yr guarantee from ecp, 60 quid with the briskoda discount.

I have just replaced the original battery on my 09 Octavia CR VRS with the 77ah Bosch battery from ECP, Fits tray ok and covers can be refitted over battery. 13mm socket for securing bolt , 10mm socket for terminal connections. Clock and mileage trip will reset to zero , steering wheel and esp light on, these reset when engine started and steering wheel turned from lock to lock.

Appreciate the rated battery is often considered low but I have a 2006 PD140 with a 61ah battery and it still starts first time hot or cold so It can't be all bad.

Car is garaged but does relatively low miles for a diesel

As always with these things a few will last well but many won't.

The op I believe has also retrofitted quite a few extras which iirc would lead to a slightly higher rated battery if fitted as standard (my pd140 has a 70Ah battery)
