traction control....

Featured Replies

hey all, Today was the first REALLY rainy day that I've driven my vrs in, and I seem to regulaly catch out the traction control in first gear.... Call me thick, but I was under the impression traction control=no wheelspin, been like that in several mercs I've driven , and a focus, but I had to back out of the acceleration and short shift, three times today, due to excessive wheelspin in 1st! (And I wasn't trying to do racing starts, just making progress!) has worked in first today, but at least three times failed!

1: yes I have got it switched on!

2: It works if , for example, I nail it in second on a wet roundabout ect..

no warning lights unless I set it off in the higher gears.....

any explanations guys (and girls) ? Is this normal for a furby vrs?

cheers.

not takin the mick but you aren't 'turning it on' are you?

some people have thought that you need to turn it in when in actual fact the switch turns it off

other than that i'm not sure mate, mine works fine on my octavia

on my brothers focus its the same as mine, a pain in the ass. if it kicks in it cuts the power right out, nightmare

no, I understand in detail how it works (Including the switch and the lights ect!) I'm not being thick and turning it off........ ;) I do know that the warning light 'on' means the system has been switched off (even understand the two types its got, braking the wheels , and the torque limiter) but still sometimes get wheelspin in first :(

thats odd, i thought cars either had a torque limiting type or a braking type and that skoda used the braking type

The ASR system is crap, I generally drive with it off anyway.

If you have ESP that system is pretty good, just leave it alone!

It's normal. At least i think it is.

Sometimes, especially on wet ground, the TC don't really work, simply becauuse there is a lot of torque, especially in the vRS. I have the same issue with my car. Sometimes even on dry road it's a little wierd about it.

hmmm ok, I find it works good to stop power understeer, just sometimes that first gear!

according to my new car brochure!: msr is part of the asr system that electoronically limits the engines torque if it detects wheelspin...

says the new vrs has msr - edl (electronic diff lock, ah, this is the thing that brakes the wheels if they spin!)) and asr.... (but not esp as standard..)

any more ideas ?

nope, no esp as standard. my 4x4 has esp and if you want a super quick getaway its a nightmare. as soon as the fronts slip a tiny bit it seems to cut all power and you go no where for a few seconds. very bad if your pulling out onto a big busy round about

if you turn it off cant you fly away without wheelspin, being 4 wheel drive and all? :) or do you just dig a skoda shaped hole in the tarmac ;)

i can get it wheel spin a tiny little bit in the wet now i have played with it a little but in the dry it just flies off the line :D

my car certainly surprises a few people seeing as its a plain white estate with towbar :D

ESP on mine - can't say I've had it cutting engine power on my Furby as I try to avoid using it in the first place. It does and has kicked in once or twice.

ASR wasnt as effective and I manage to easily wheelspin it in 1st / 2nd in the demo car.

Worth remembering that ASR only reduces engine torque as much as it can - it may still spin it's wheels when the power is higher than the tyre can put down onto the road ;)

I had a fun morning in the rain as well. I'm still getting used to the car and got caught out when pulling away a couple of times. It seems to spin the wheels more than the ESP dealer car I had a go in, and there was no flashing light on the dash. All the acronyms confuse the hell outta me, but I suspect the EDL was triggering rather than the ASR as there were ABS type noises.

First time I drove my old Pug 306DT in the wet the turbo hit boost on a roundabout in third gear and scared the hell outta me by spinning up the inside front wheel and understeering off at a tangent. I instinctively backed off and it then did the Pug snap oversteer trick.

No interfering electronics back then, and the turbo hit with an almighty thump at 2200rpm.

On a side note once it's remapped the T/C does seem a lot less instrusive as if it's been backed off a bit for better progress.

hey all, Today was the first REALLY rainy day that I've driven my vrs in, and I seem to regulaly catch out the traction control in first gear....

I get the same on my 2.0 Elegance, particularly if I have a bit of steering on - such as pulling out from a junction.

IMO on my vRS in wet weather the best thing to do is short shift to 3rd then you should get some of the power down, it also doesnt help in the slightest if your tyres are worn. A decent set of rubber should help glue the car down and reduce T/C interference and wheel slip no end.

Directional Tires all the way

Traction control (even that in very expensive cars) only activates once wheelspin has occured - otherwise it would be known as 'Progress Control'

Seriously though, the reason you never noticed it in the Merc is probably due to differences with torque delivery, weight distribution and tyre size. In normal driving you don't see it in most cars because you tend not to wheelspin in normal driving.

Turn off the traction next time it rains - you'll see it does work!!

One of the biggest problems is with the Fabia's spongy suspension, so as you accelerate hard, the front lifts and there's less "weight" keeping the front wheels in contact with the road so they are able to spin more easily. Get yourself some stiffer springs and you'll keep the front end planted and improve the situation massively IMHO :D

Chris

Very true - stiffer springs and/or a more controlled right-foot ;)

The ASR system is crap. Proper men turn it off :P

'Proper men' don't ever see the difference - try driving properly

Indeed ;)

Believe me my friend, I can drive properly. I dont need silly driver aids to help me out :P

Exactly - this is why you wouldnt notice the difference in the first place ;)

Turn it off. Its rubbish.

Its the first thing I do when I get in the car.
